Early-Bird Tickets for Big Nac Music Festival On Sale Now

Texas Music Magazine is pleased to announce the inaugural Big Nac Music Festival March 5-8, 2015. Early-bird tickets are on sale now at www.bignac.com.
The Big Nac Music Festival will showcase over 40 of the best up and coming Texas’ bands across multiple genres, including country, rock, blues, Tejano, indie and bluegrass. The event will also include free “pop up” day shows featuring different talented musicians and various children’s activities.
“There’s something for everyone at the Big Nac Music Festival,” said event organizer Jon Niess. “There’s a variety of musical performances to suit each individual’s taste, and activities for all ages to enjoy.”
Located in the heart of downtown Nacogdoches, the four indoor venues for the main performances include the widely popular classic Texas dance hall, Banita Creek Hall, as well as the adjacent Mill Room, the renovated Mast Hall and the beautifully refurbished Liberty Bell. Locations for the free day shows and children’s activities will be announced at a later date.
“We are thrilled to partner with Texas Music Magazine to bring this event to Nacogdoches and offer something new for locals and visitors alike,” said Nacogdoches CVB executive director Melissa Sanford. “They produce a similar event in West Texas called Viva Big Bend and it has been very popular. It attracts over 10,000 people every year and features some big name musicians.”
Four-day passes, which are good for all nighttime shows, are currently available for $40 (plus $2.00 handling fee) through November 30th and may be purchased online at www.bignac.com. Ticket prices increase to $50 (plus $2.00 handling fee) on December 1st. You may also purchase your tickets at the upcoming Boots and Brew event in downtown Nacogdoches on September 27th. A limited number of VIP passes will also be available and will include access to VIP happy hours, gift bags and VIP seating at Banita Creek Hall. All tickets will be emailed and then each ticketholder will present their ticket at the Big Nac box office to pick up their festival wristband. Box office location and times will be announced at a later date. Tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable.

Company makes donation to percussion program at SFA

Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies at SFA, displays some of the sticks, mallets, brushes and timpani sticks Vic Firth Inc. donated to the university’s percussion program.

A drumstick and mallet company has made a generous donation to the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and its percussion program, providing a valuable resource for students.

Vic Firth Inc. has donated several thousand dollars of sticks, mallets, brushes and timpani sticks to the SFA Percussion Studio, making it possible for students in the percussion program to try different types of mallets and sticks at any time, according to Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies at SFA.

The donation allows students to experiment using a variety of mallets in class and during lessons and practice sessions instead of having to wait until February when their traditional opportunity for such experimentation occurs in the vendor area at the Texas Music Educators Association’s annual conference in San Antonio, Meyer explained.

“Being able to make musical choices regarding the implements students use in solo and ensemble compositions is crucial in developing their personal, musical voice,” Meyer said. “Now, students have this new resource – the SFA Percussion Studio Mallet Library – to help them achieve their full potential as musicians and music educators.”

Vic Firth’s donation amounted to more than 200 pairs of sticks and mallets. Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Boston, Mass., the company bills itself as the world’s largest manufacturer of drum sticks and mallets, which are made in Newport, Maine.

“No other university in the United States has such a wide selection of implements at its programs’ or students’ disposal,” Meyer said.
