SFA’s online Master of Science in human sciences offers flexible education

In 2003, Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences was among the first to offer an online Master of Science in human sciences. Today, the program continues to have impact.

“This program was one of the first of its kind,” said Dr. Lynda Martin, director of SFA’s School of Human Sciences. “Most universities offered only face-to-face programs, but after many stakeholders expressed their interest in an online program, we began to address the need.”

SFA’s Master of Science in human sciences is a 30-hour online degree program with a thesis option or a 36-hour non-thesis option. Graduate students can select from four program emphases: Child development and family living, family and consumer sciences, interior design and health care interior design.

“Every individual is part of a family and community, and each individual needs food, shelter, clothing etc. That is what this degree program focuses on as students take courses in human resources, customer service, sustainability, supervision and research and then apply these theories to their fields,” Martin said.

Shannin Williams, interior designer and coordinator of the SFA Design Center, graduated from the Master of Science in human sciences program in 2011 and has since been putting her degree to use.

“This degree helped me raise the bar in my profession and broaden my knowledge and education in my field. I completed extensive research while working on my master’s degree in interior design and that has taught me to continue my research before designing a space to make sure it will function properly for the end user,” Williams said. “This research helps me daily in my work as it gives me the outlook I need to design spaces in a higher-education facility.”

Likewise, Ron Watson, associate director of SFA’s physical plant, is enrolled in the program and working toward a graduate degree. Watson said the program is flexible and accommodating for working professionals, as coursework can be completed according to the student’s schedule. He also emphasized that the program can be tailored to the student’s career goals.

“The thing that sets this program apart is the willingness of the chair and faculty and staff members to work with me on a specific program that meets my needs. There is never any sense that I am a number, a statistic or billable hours,” Watson said. “Every faculty member has treated me as a professional he or she is collaborating with. I was given individual, personal attention in a very professional manner.”

SFA graduates, assistant professor in the School of Human Sciences work abroad at Cannes International Film Festival

Stephen F. Austin State University hospitality administration graduates Anna Smith, left, and Amanda Powers, right, pose with Dr. Gina Fe Causin, assistant professor in SFA’s School of Human Sciences, inside the American Pavilion before a red carpet event at the Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France. In May, Smith and Powers worked with the Cannes International Film Festival Culinary Program while Causin served as a faculty adviser.

Discarding their white kitchen uniforms for evening gowns and heels, recent Stephen F. Austin State University hospitality administration graduates Amanda Powers and Anna Smith make their red carpet debut at the Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France. Paparazzi flash their cameras as Powers and Smith, along with Dr. Gina Fe Causin, assistant professor in SFA’s School of Human Sciences, strike a pose like celebrities.

In May, Powers, of Cedar Park, Texas, and Smith, of Thicket, Texas, joined an elite group of students at the American Pavilion as interns in the Cannes International Film Festival Culinary Program.

The Cannes International Film Festival celebrates cinematographic art with various red carpet events, workshops, seminars, film screenings and more. The American Pavilion is the center of activity during the festival for the American film community. It is a membership-based communications and hospitality center for journalists, publicists, celebrities, filmmakers and motion picture executives working at the festival, and it provides students with a variety of immersive program offerings.

As members of the culinary program, Powers and Smith prepared food in the American Pavilion, which is comprised of a kitchen, restaurant, coffee bar and conference area.

“It was a lot of fun and busy most of the time,” Powers said. “The highlight of working the festival was the friendships I made with the other culinary and hospitality team members.”

From hamburgers and hotdogs to curry lamb chops and chocolate cups filled with mousse, Powers and Smith prepared a variety of meals throughout the festival, learning different techniques with each dish. Powers recalls learning how to make fresh-stuffed artichokes.

Causin, who was instrumental in creating the American Pavilion event/hospitality management internship at the festival, served as a faculty adviser while in Cannes. She also participated in a roundtable discussion where she spoke about accessibility to events for individuals with mobility and visual disabilities.

“Working at the American Pavilion taught our students to be very meticulous, how to multitask and how to handle high-pressure situations,” Causin said. “Students also learned how to act professional around VlPs, dignitaries and celebrities.”

Hundreds of filmmakers, producers, and American and international celebrities attended the festival. In fact, Powers said she not only saw celebrities such as Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Allen, but also prepared them food platters.

When the students were not working the festival, they traveled to Cannes and other areas, including Èze, Paris, Monte Carlo, Saint Paul de Vence, Iles des Lérins and Italy.

“These experiences give our students inspiration for the future,” Causin said. “They provide students with a different perspective, both personally and professionally.”

Powers agrees this experience helped broaden her horizons and network.

“Overall, the experience taught me how fun it is to travel and to meet new people. I was able to see other students’ skills and styles in the kitchen and make new friends,” Powers said. “It was an absolutely amazing experience, and I would strongly recommend the festival to anyone interested in culinary, hospitality, business or film.”
