City embraces impact of new game Pokemon Go and Intertwines With New Sidewalk Ordinances

City of Nacogdoches residents are invited to share ideas to help shape the future of our community in regards to connectivity, walkability, and sidewalks while taking advantage of the new sensation, Pokemon Go. As part of this game, a lure module will be placed at City Hall on Friday July 22, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m to attract citizens and gain feedback on these topics.

Since residents walk on the sidewalks as part of the game, the City of Nacogdoches hopes players will attend this event and tell the city about their experiences on the sidewalks throughout town.

Last week, the City of Nacogdoches invited all residents to a face-to-face discussion about sidewalks in our community. The discussion was held at Nacogdoches High School as part of the #cityofnac Discussion Series. The event was attended by over 30 residents.

The average Pokemon Go player is in his or her mid to late twenties. Due to this, the City of Nacogdoches hopes to be able to gain a new perspective on sidewalks and walkability from a another age group and different audience.

“Our goal of the #cityofnac discussion series is to make sure a well rounded opinion is formed in order to create the best sidewalk ordinance possible. By engaging this new audience, we hope to achieve this goal,” Amy Mehaffey, Main Street and Communications Director said.

“Overall this sidewalk discussion is important because we need to begin a two-way conversation to allow city leaders and community members to understand what’s needed in Nacogdoches,” Steve Bartlett, City Engineer said.

A third discussion series session regarding sidewalks will be held on August 9 in order to begin defining specific, ordinance-related verbiage for the future proposed ordinance.

Representatives of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce will give a brief report and thank you presentation for the 27th Annual Texas Blueberry Festival presented by Tipton Ford-Lincoln at the July 19 City Council meeting. Festival Chair Grace Handler and Chamber Chairman Rusty Rust plan to make the presentation.

“The second Saturday in June was a great blueberry celebration in Nacogdoches,” Handler said. “More than 19,000 attendees enjoyed the day’s activities in historic downtown, and that would not have happened without the support and partnership with the City.”

The festival brought a calculated $2.09 million economic impact for the community. More than 4,000 fresh blueberry pancakes were served by the Kiwanis Club, festival visitors picked more than 1,000 lbs. of blueberries at The Blueberry Place and the Nacogdoches Quilters Guild raised $2,352 in the donation quilt raffle that was distributed to Love INC and the Nacogdoches Treatment Center.

“We’re very pleased that in nearly every category, the festival activities were increased this year over the previous years,” said Chamber Interim President/CEO Bill Teague. “We believe it is a great economic impact to the region and deeply appreciate all of the volunteers, vendors and staff who helped make it possible.”

According to Rust, “Sponsors of the event such as Presenting Sponsor Tipton Ford-Lincoln have contributed to the funds needed to keep this family-friendly festival a ‘no admission charge’ event. Some sponsors take the opportunity to work events, and the Chamber Board of Directors sincerely appreciate the participation.”

SFA Gardens to host seed-saving workshop

Heirloom strains of corn that have been selected, saved and passed down over thousands of years will be one of several examples addressed during the SFA Gardens’ seed-saving seminar and workshop, which is slated from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building in the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

A seed-saving seminar and workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building in the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

Led by SFA Gardens’ research associate Greg Grant, the workshop will allow participants to explore the basics of saving vegetable and flower seeds, including seed development, harvesting, cleaning and storage. They also will learn the different categories of seed treatment in order to promote germination.

“Seed saving is economical, helps preserve non-commercial heirloom varieties and provides an avenue for creating unique and more adapted selections,” Grant said.

An active seed saver, Grant is author of “Texas Fruit and Vegetable Gardening,” “Heirloom Gardening in the South,” and “Home Landscaping.” He also has introduced a number of popular plants into home gardens and the Texas nursery industry.

Space is limited. To make a reservation, contact Elyce Rodewald, SFA Gardens’ research associate, at erodewald@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-1832. Cost is $25 for SFA Gardens members and $30 for non-members. A second family member may attend for an additional $10.
