Stephen F. Austin State University’s Student Development and Access Services within the Division of Student Affairs announced they have rescheduled MLK Day of Service to Jan. 20 due to impending poor weather conditions.
Originally slated for Jan. 15, the event honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who inspired thousands of people around the United States to make positive impacts in their communities, according to Ja’Von Long, assistant director of student development.
“MLK Day of Service brings together SFA students and Nacogdoches community members and organizations to not only complete community service projects in Nacogdoches but also close divides and show there is strength in coming together,” Long said. “The SFA and Nacogdoches cultures are intertwined, so we must acknowledge and create a connection to strengthen our community.”
Check-in will begin at 10 a.m. on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center, followed by an opening welcome in the Grand Ballroom. Participants will volunteer at service sites from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and return to campus for a drive-thru celebration where they will receive snacks and a free T-shirt.
According to Long, organizers are expecting approximately 800 participants in this year’s event.
