Obituary: Ruby Childers Sherrod

     Ruby Childers Sherrod passed away Monday, February 21, 2011. She was born in San Augustine County, Texas, on January 25, 1930, to the late John Elmer Childers, Sr., and Cornelia Harrell Childers.

     She is survived by her husband, Walter Sherrod of Nacogdoches, Texas; two sisters, Mary Childers Richardson and husband Lester of Houston, Texas, and Peggy Childers Bowen of Victoria, Texas; her nephews, Henry Childers and wife Henri of Houston, Texas, John Childers of Longview, Texas, Stephen Bowen and wife Kathryn of Kerrville, Texas, and Ted C. Bowen and wife Lisa of Victoria, Texas; nieces, Bevilly Kallina and husband Fred of Houston, Texas, Carol Ansel and husband Kirby of Houston, Texas, Ginger Martin and husband James of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Joan Wood of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Billie Jo Childers of Nacogdoches, Texas; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Verdell Childers and John Elmer Childers, Jr.; and a sister, Edna Childers Bates.

     Ruby graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor of science degree. She held many honors and was a member of Chi Omega Soriety. She taught school for many years. She moved to Conroe after retiring and owned and operated a gift shop.

     After her husband retired they moved to Nacogdoches to be near family. She and her husband Walter enjoyed traveling extensively, as well as collecting art, antiques, and crystal. They enjoyed their hobby and meeting new and old friends. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

     Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Sunset Memorial Park, 5127 North Street in Nacogdoches.

     Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or charity of choice.

     The family wishes to offer sincere appreciation to Nacogdoches Medical Center’s doctors and nurses, especially the ICU staff for their special care.
