Tourism is a powerful economic driver for local business

sherryDirect travel spending brought $79.6 million to Nacogdoches County in 2017. That figure was reported by an economic and market research company contracted by Governor Greg Abbott’s office and supports the message that “tourism” is big business in the local economy.

“Tourism is a major component of the Texas economic engine,” C. Wayne Mitchell, President and CEO of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, said. “Our business leaders need to understand the economic impact of the hospitality industry.”

To better understand the rewards and impact of the tourism industry, Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Sherry Chaney Morgan will present “The Power of Tourism, an exploration of current trends in travel and tourism and their direct effects on our daily lives and businesses in Nacogdoches” at the Chamber’s Fourth Friday Luncheon, noon to 1 p.m., April 27 at Austin Hall, 4606 North St.

Attend and hear about the economic impact of day travelers as well as overnight stays; Hotel Occupancy Tax and Short Term Rentals; and the evolving role of the visitors center in today’s travel landscape.

Morgan holds a bachelors of arts in teaching from Sam Houston State University and a masters of education from Stephen F. Austin State University. She has worked in the fields of education and university student affairs in addition to her current career in travel and tourism. Morgan is the youngest of four children born to Shelby and Zoe Chaney of Conroe, TX, and she is proud mother of two daughters, Zoë and Sadie. She enjoys reading, writing, music and photography.

Before beginning her role as executive director of the Nacogdoches Convention CVB, Morgan was a tourism coordinator for the Conroe CVB. She is a Certified Tourism Executive, Texas Friendly Hospitality Trainer and president-elect of the Texas Forest Trail Region.

All attending the Chamber lunch meeting may enter the $50 drawing sponsored by Commercial Bank of Texas, and all Chamber members are entered in a $250 drawing sponsored by Axley & Rode, LLP, but you must be present to win. Lunch is $16 and attendee RSVPs are requested by 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 25. Call the Chamber at 936-560-5533 or email info@nactx.com for reservations.
