SCHOOL STARTS MONDAY- POLICE ADVISE CAUTION
The first day of school for Nacogdoches ISD students is Monday, August 28th , and the Nacogdoches Police Department reminds motorists to use caution in and around school zones.
“Traffic is traditionally congested for the first few days in school zones”, said NPD Sgt. Greg Sowell. “Motorists are urged to use extreme caution in these areas”.
NPD reminds motorists that pedestrian traffic will increase in school zones and that speed limits are lower than usual in designated school zones.
Motorists are reminded that cell phone use in school zones is prohibited by state law, unless it is a call for emergency help.
Texting or electronic messaging while driving is against city ordinance at any location in the city.
The Nacogdoches Police Department’s Patrol and Traffic Divisions will be actively patrolling school zones, as well as monitoring school busses loading and unloading. Citations will be issued for violations.
Motorists are reminded that state law requires vehicles to stop when a school bus is displaying flashing red lights, either loading or unloading students. “A good rule is to never pass a stopped school bus unless you are directed to do so by the driver, and then only with extreme caution”, Sowell added.
