Preservation Month and 2nd Story Tours Slated for May

Citizens in Nacogdoches will join thousands of individuals around the country as part of a nationwide celebration of 2016 National Preservation Month in May 2016. “This Place Matters” is the theme of the month-long celebration, which is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the National Trust has extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement.

The City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program is excited to announce tickets are on
sale now for our preservation event, 2nd Story Tours: Discovering Downtown, set for Saturday, May 7th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in historic downtown Nacogdoches.

“Preservation has played such an important role in the redevelopment of downtown that we try to do something special to honor it each year,” said Communications/Main Street Director Amy Mehaffey.

This year’s 2nd Story Tour has four properties lined up for ticket holders to tour: Fredonia Hotel, The Old Tobacco Warehouse, an upcoming downtown project showcase with Laura Culpepper, and renovated 2nd story apartments at 203 E. Main & 105 N. Pecan. Tickets are $25 and are available now at the Visitor’s Center, located at 200 E. Main Street and online at https://www.eventbrite.com/myevent?eid=24573235208. All proceeds go back to the beautification of historic downtown Nacogdoches.

Many local businesses will also be offering shopping promotions this day as part of Sale on the Trail — in conjunction with the El Camino Real Trail.

“This is a great opportunity to spend the day downtown shopping and touring properties, the general public rarely gets to see,” said Mehaffey. For more questions on 2nd Story Tours or historic downtown Naocgdoches contact the Main Street Office at 936-559-2573 or mehaffeya@ci.nacogdoches.tx.us.
