Legislative update at chamber luncheon

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon is noon to 1 p.m., Aug. 28 at Austin Hall, 4603 North St. Sen. Robert Nichols will give a legislative update for District 3. Gold sponsors are J. Stanley Lenox, III, and T-REX-S Outdoor Store.

“During the luncheon I will be discussing the 84th Legislative Session and giving an overview of the upcoming biennium’s budget which included an increase in funding for border security, education and mental health services,” said Sen. Nichols. “I will also go over the upcoming November 3 election, where Texans will have a chance to vote on proposed constitutional amendments which include funding for transportation and proposed homestead and property tax relief.”

First elected to the Texas Senate in 2006, Robert Nichols represents 19 counties including the greater part of East Texas and Montgomery County. In the Texas Senate, Nichols serves as Chairman for the Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Senate Finance, Natural Resources and Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committees. He is a member of the Legislative Audit Committee and a former Vice Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Committee.

During his five sessions as a state senator, Nichols authored and passed legislation to protect landowners’ rights, increase educational opportunities in East Texas and reform transportation policies. He has worked to reduce Medicaid fraud, and promote free-market principles. During his time with the Sunset Advisory Committee, he was able to help eliminate six state agencies which saved the tax payers $161.9 million.

Luncheon reservations are required and a registration form is available in Forms at nacogdoches.org. A secure “register and pay online” option is available on the website in the Hot News section. Lunch is $16, and the deadline for reservations is noon, Wednesday, Aug. 26.

All attendees will be entered in a $50 cash drawing sponsored by Commercial Bank of Texas , and every Chamber member is entered in a $250 drawing sponsored by Axley & Rode, LLP, but you must be present to win.
