William Leroy Jones

The pictures I am sending are of my father William Leroy Jones. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII and his feet were frozen as he defended his foxhole with his wounded Sargent next to him. He spent several months in hospitals when he came home due to frost bite on his feet. The doctors wanted to take his feet but he fought them and had problems the rest of his life but still played softball, worked as a cable repairman for SW Bell, water skied and did all the normal dad things.

We lost him in Feb. 1999 and it is still a big gap in my life. Thank you for asking me to do this. William Leroy Jones was born Sept 14 1925 in Fort Worth Texas. He worked for SW Bell/ATT for 38 years as a cable repairman(monkey) and then as a switchman in the local office. He played Softball and was an outstanding pitcher, he water skied mostly on one ski and adored his kids and granddaughters. My brother and I never knew about his medal or citation until I was in High School and my brother had to do a report for history on WWII. My mom gave him a copy of the citation without my dad knowing it. When Wally ask him about it I thought he was going to kill Mom. He didn’t speak to her for several hours. He always said that it was such a terrifying experience that he didn’t want us to know anything about it. He was also a very modest man. Pop never thought anything he did was unusual or need to have any attention called to it. He helped a lot of people both with financial and physical help though out his life.

Thank you to every person who ever served. From every soldier who spent a night away from their family, ever had to witness the loss of their friend in combat, or simply wore the uniform proudly so we could be the great country we are.
