R.J. Barrett, 79, of Nacogdoches passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at his residence.
Born Sept. 15, 1933, in Nacogdoches County, he married Sadie Randall on April 2, 1955. R.J. worked hard all of his life. As a teenager, he worked in a bread factory in Houston. When he moved back to Nacogdoches, he worked at DeWitt’s Hatchery and moved to the feed mill as manager. After several years when the mill closed he went to work for Trees Inc. and Aspen Trees. He then started his own business, Barrett Tree Service. He and his younger brother then began working together starting Barrett Brothers Logging. In 2012, R.J. retired at the age of 78. Retirement was not in his plans but his health caused him to decide to stay home with family.
He only took one family vacation—Hot Springs, Arkansas. After one night he was ready to go home.
R.J. loved riding with his DPS friends for many years chasing cars, especially with his lifelong friends Pete Baggett and Tom Maddox.
He was a song leader for many years at Lone Pine Baptist Church and Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He had served as an ordained deacon at Pleasant Hill.
R.J. cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved being behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler. He traveled many miles with “The Glory Boys” and “The Faulkners” as they sang southern gospel music. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all of his heart and could not wait to go down the Gloryland Road.
His survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sadie Randall Barrett; daughters, Sherry Faulkner of Nacogdoches and Glenda Cantu and husband Edward of Nacogdoches; sons, Bones Barrett of Nacogdoches and Kenny Barrett and wife Becky of Nacogdoches; sister, Aline Wisener and husband Marlin of Rhome, Texas; grandchildren, Garrel Faulkner, Gaven Faulkner, Tiffany Howard, Sarah Fiore, J.R. Barrett, Beverly Barrett, Jessie Barrett, and Britta Scriptsick; 11 great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Laura Barrett; six brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located at the intersection of FM 2864 and FM 2664, with Bro. Garrel Faulkner, Bro. David Coleman, and Bro. John Spurgeon officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Tom Randall, Charles Randall, Pete Baggett, Tom Maddox, Lendell Martin, and Tommy Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler Brown, Edgar Kolb, John Loupe, Kelvin Wade, and Francisco Chavez.
