SFA to open exhibition of works by East Texas artist Bill Haveron

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will open “Bill Haveron: Pre-Existing Condition” with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception on Saturday, June 9, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Bill Haveron’s graphite on paper “Decertification Pending” is included in “Bill Haveron: Pre-Existing Condition,” which will open at Stephen F. Austin State University’s The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 9, and run through Saturday, July 7.

The drawings, paintings and sculptural reliefs included in the show are transcriptions of the artist’s personal visions. Haveron describes his graphite drawings as “fantasy escapes” and “dream worlds where anything can happen and all things are possible.”

In his artist statement, the Bryan native adds that his work is open to interpretations. “I can tell people what the drawings mean to me but that doesn’t mean that they have to mean the same thing to anyone else.”

Haveron’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions across Texas, in San Francisco; Los Angeles; Santa Fe, N.M.; and in Berlin and Koln, Germany. His art is found in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Modern Art Museum, Modern Art Museum of Austin, El Paso Museum of Art and Abilene Art Museum.

The show will be on view in the downstairs Ledbetter Gallery through Saturday, July 7.

The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. Its regular hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free.
