Norman’s Nacogdoches, March 5

Written by Norman Johnson, contributing writer

I have been a pretty good boy for the past few years. That’s only because they told me I might die and I wanted to have a fairly decent record when I arrive up there so I can move right into my new solid gold house lined in silver. Otherwise I might be thrown by my loving God down into that horrible furnace. I just can’t stand the smell of humans cooking.

However , an occurrence this past week pushed me off the deep end. I’m getting to be my grumpy old self again. John Wayne once said that he always liked grumpy old men and durned if he didn’t become one.

The thing is that they found out about the problem in September 2011, and didn’t say anything to you, the citizens until now. More than 1800 letters were sent to the affected city employees until February, 2012 that their personal information had been misplaced. Have our city officials ever heard of the term “Identity Theft?” Mr. Jeffers assured us that the man seems the city sold the locked filing cabinet to some guy. I need to point out that the filing cabinet held personal information on 1800 city employees. That’s why it was locked dummies. Ooops, sorry to quote our beloved Governor. An elderly lady apparently had the nerve to call inquiring about this situation to the city. The Mayor, city council and Mr. Dynamo, City Mangler Jim Jeffers. Oops, I apologize. I misspelled Manager. He went to work and retrieved said cabinet. The thing is that they found out about the problem in September, 2011 and didn’t say anything to you the citizens until February 2012. “Identity Theft” costs millions of dollars to millions of people, some right here in our beloved city. It can totally ruin a person’s life. Just ask someone around town who it has happened to. It’s almost as bad what that good, decent citizen who conned all that money from a lot of our locals did. Do you want perhaps millions of unknown people sitting in front of a computer rummaging through your personal information? Mr. Jeffers assured us that no harm was done because the person that wound up with the cabinet seemed like a good ole boys. Yes, damage was done. Did I hear someone say we need some security around here? It is serious because it hints of a cover-up whether one actually occurred or not. We’ll probably never know with a good knock down and drag out.

The guys in the Hampton building need to understand that we care. In the words of that great plastic object that could wind up as leader of the free world said, “I don’t worry about the little people.” In our beloved city we don’t either unless we happen to live in the Northeast Ward. They tell the have some real heavy hitters over there. I wouldn’t know. I’m one of the little folks. I’m like the man in the movie “Network.” He shouted from his apartment balcony so that everyone could hear, “”I mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”

Thank you. Thank you very much.

P.S. Congratulations to Judy McDonald, a public servant who cared about every single citizen. The library will be named for her. That’s my equal time thank you to our city officials. Thank you very much ! ELVIS LIVES!!!
