Herrington: Conservative Movies

Chris Herrington, Contributing Writer

Why hasn’t the conservative faction of the culture produced its own movies since it perceives Hollywood as being so very liberal? The National Review has posted a list of movies, made in Hollywood, of course, that it considers, somewhat at least, conservative. I trust that people will consider what the most conservative of magazines touts as being its best representation.

“We asked readers of National Review Online to submit nominations,” they say. “…the results are indisputable: Conservatives enjoy these films because they are great movies that offer compelling messages about freedom, families, patriotism, traditions, and more.”

None of these celebrate the conservative as a success. No CEO’s at home with their multi-million dollar swimming pools and yachts. . There are some questionable choices: Batman uses his wealth to fight corruption, so really? And I am sure they did not mean to include the Extended uncut version of “Team America,” I mean….Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, People! Okay, so some war movies where people are fighting some oppressor. Of course, “Avatar” did that, but it was way too close to the bone for this list. But, I want to tackle the use of “Groundhog Day” here.
Are you sure? Bill Murray, of “Ghostbusters,” which is also on the list, learns to give unselfishly of himself, stop abusing his cameraman, and stop lording it over a woman he formerly objectifies by completely becoming humble and selfless, the ultimate community volunteer. I wonder if this is the self-image that conservatives have of themselves.

Ted Nugent:

Lyrics to “Stranglehold:”

Here I come again now baby
Like a dog in heat
Tell it’s me by the way now baby
I like to tap the streets

Now I’ve been smoking for so long
You know I’m here to stay
Got you in a stranglehold baby
You best get out of the way

Gonna cruise is a bitch now baby
You know you can’t do me ’round
If your house gets in my way baby
You know I’ll burn it down

You remember the night that you left me
You put me in my place
Got you in a stranglehold now baby
You better cross your way
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/ted_nugent/strangle_hold.html ]
Sometimes you wanna get higher
Sometimes you gotta start low
Some people think they gonna die someday
I got news you never got to go old

Come on come on up X4
Come on come on baby
Come on come on up
Come on come on baby
Come on come on

Gonna cruise is a bitch now baby
You know you can’t do me ’round
If your house gets in my way baby
You know I’ll burn it down

You remember the night that you left me
You put me in my place
Got you in a stranglehold now baby
You better cross your way

I’m not sure I understand the message in light of their attempt to paint liberal Hollywood as so hell bound.

Maybe I don’t understand the message at all. I’ll go to the source.

About the liberal media…..

About the conservative media…

I’m not saying that Chomsky is the source; I am saying, however, that buried in the messages we see in front of us are answers that can be helpful.

The GOP and the Tea Party have a set of rules, or at least a small variation on a theme, for how they feel we need to deal with the issues at hand. The progressives, the liberals, the left, the protesters of Wall St., see other rules, depending on who is talking. We can see that conservatives feel that it is all about “buyer beware; get an education, and do your homework.” The irony here is that they seem very steeped in a Darwinian drama of survival of the fittest, something they say they distain but practice in the bull pen all the time. The liberals feel that it’s a tough world, and a little help would be, well, helpful, even if they do give away the farm and put the entire country at risk of “ransackery.” The extremes of these positions tend to bend backwards; both positions want to skim the national treasure. The conservatives, who have, as even Elizabeth Warren admits, earned their fair share by having the ideas and risking the capital to begin with, want to capitalize on the resources and take the profit for themselves, which is not ultimately that different than taking it from them and giving it to people who did not earn it at all, since when the money ends up in an offshore account the money flow stops the free market system from working. This seems disingenuous. The conservatives believe life begins as sacred but it can go rancid and need to be jailed, fired, humiliated, executed, or assassinated. The liberals have turned help into an art form, socially impairing people for generations by not holding their feet to the fire to get help and then get moving towards employment; sustainability needs to include self-sustanability, a measure they have yet to adopt in their party platform.

What can we then say about what we are facing as a nation and as a species? We have got to stop blaming and shaming each other. It’s a waste of time. Elizabeth Warren says that she feels that the rich should not feel awkward about being compelled to help out to some degree. Conservatives don’t totally disagree with the notion of helping through the churches where they can write it off their taxes, but they do not want to be compelled and want a choice as to what to do about it. They want a choice but they deny choices for others in other areas, gay life or abortion. They will or may join in and do what they can or will do in areas they feel so moved to work in, to give to, or to help with in some way. No one wants to be forced to do anything. But what is it that the Christian conservative nation of America is doing to help out?

What are we to think? Who are the special interests? Who is really in control? Who is to blame? Who has the best answers?

On the left and on the right….

How will it work?

Newt Gingrich explains:

He also believes that if we raise the healthcare costs for the individual, the patient will be more proactive in taking care of his own healthcare. Raise insurance premiums, lower the benefits, and increase copays. Force people to take care of themselves by making it too expensive to be sick? Okay. Why not increase the taxes on capitalists to force them to stop being stingy with profits so that all boats can float? These are tough questions.

1. Conservatives are not monsters, generally.
2. Liberals are not idiots, mostly.
3. America is in a hell of a bind, no kidding.

If the conservatives had the house for 12 years, why didn’t they fix all of this? If the liberals had Obama in and he was supposed to fix it, why couldn’t he get the base to whip up some answers to implement? He seems to have given away the farm to an immovable force, the GOP. IF the conservatives will not rein in those who take advantage, the Bernie Madoffs and the Ken Lays, then America will have to do it for them, and will probably not show a great deal of discrimination in their incriminations. “If you don’t stand apart from them, we are probably against you,” they seem to be saying in protest.

4. Is Ann Coulter married, I don’t think so. So, is she a virgin or an adulteress?
5. Is Obama an American citizen or not?

And the story continues….. Next, the Christians gather $10 from every believer and make the first multi-billion dollar film…”The Second Coming of Christ.”
