Herrington: Parents are in the DARK

Chris Herrington, Contributing Writer

Parents often ask me why their children are having such a tough time making their way through the world. I tell them that they themselves have no idea what kinds of pressures these kids are under now days. Let me give you a hint as to what our kids go through on a daily basis so that you can have even an inkling of what they are facing. I was listening to the radio that was being broadcast at the SFA gym this last Monday night from 3 until 6 PM. The songs are available on YouTube. Here are two of the ones I remembered.

Best Night Of My Life Lyrics

[Jamie Foxx] http://www.notablebiographies.com/news/Ca-Ge/Foxx-Jamie.html
(Foxx, 44, describes putting the moves on a girl who is 21; they are drinking, he wants to see her in less clothing, and he wants to have sex with her, hoping that it will produce a child; he is hoping that she wants to have the time of her life with him for the night. There are no real consequences for this relationship, no on-going relationship or continued support in any way inferred. Our children may not have a clear sense of what a relationship is other than getting drunk and having sex.) This is not a moral examination of whether getting drunk, having sex, or having casual relationships are appropriate modes of conduct; I leave that to each family to police for themselves. In other societies and in other times, that young people would engage in these things is a matter of historic fact, especially due to the previously shorter life spans. I am merely asking people to think about the pressures that our youth feel in facing music, movies, TV, and radio that infers that the practices of these life choices are quite common.
The lyrics for Foxx’s song go like this:

I’m feeling good
I’m having fun
this is the best night of my life
girl can i be real?
I just wanna feel on your booty
that’s not a big deal
shawty you drinkin gon that Martini
I wanna see you in a bikini
or better yet a thong
baby what’s wrong?
tryna tell your girls what’s you purpose of this song
ooh, I want you closer
like a model of a poster
I wanna get ya to the car to the crib
up the stairs to the bed
in the morning you’ll be cooking us set
oooh baby, I love the smell of your perfume
and if we were kids I’d be breaking curfew
to stay up with you,

you gon need a scarf?
wrap your head cause it’s gon get wild
if we keep lovin’ like this, we might make a child
a daughter, a son, whichever one
girl your second to none

I’m feeling good
I’m having fun
this is the best night of my life
we off the Patron
and both of us gone
girl this gon be the best night of my life
you coulda been anywhere in the World
but you’re right here with me girl
and if we go home and make love
this could be the best night of your life

so girl let me ask you a question while we’re sipping bud
are you going home with me
after the club
thats a yes or a no, I’m just letting ya know
where this night can go
and girl I’m hoping you could see things my way
cause I just want your love to stay
tonight, tonight

I could be your bartender, tell me what you’re sippin’ on
girl, I’m not a travel agent so what you trippin’ on
you say I think I could make it happen cause I’m famous
nah, I’m just tryna get it cracking cause we faded
get you to my crib, spend some time alone
barely over 21 that mean you kinda grown
ermm, and I’m tat tat tatted up
come out to that bread
I’mma stack it up
where you born
baby girl back it up

Chris Brown …………Make a Movie….
(We see a similar plot, alcohol, Patron is a favorite, and this time all of it needs to be documented in a video. He seems of have even less real feelings for the young woman; he just wants his fantasy and then he will be a director. She has the kind of talent that looks best when she is doing what? Read it for yourself. Here are the lyrics, hardly touched, well slightly.)
The perfect storm is Twista and Chris Brown ya dig
I got a new one for ya
Lets make a movie baby

Twista got cars
Big swagger
I’m a rock star like Mick Jagger
And I got bars that I spit faster
You a hot star no (girl) badder
So let me take you on a ride
On a journey with the one that you call daddy
Who gon make you get it wet
But this time we gon do something romantic and different
I’ll tell you about it when we get on the movie set

I was thinking that we could just make a sex tape
Plus I think yo face cute when it’s a HD
Maybe I could tape you and you could tape me
When I pull my h2 up to your h3
You know that you want to be in this movie
So don’t be acting like a trippin’ with a stranger mission
Recording you while you lovin’ me down below
Switching the camera angle when we change positions
You could be the director aiming the camera down at me
Filming me licking until you say cut
Ready for any footage you wanna get
Ain’t gotta call nobody else because
I do my own stunts
Its the X rated version of a box office hit
I see you ready to strip for this

So let me get the music in, get the tape in, get the cameras in (oh oh oh ohhh)
Baby we don’t need no script for this
I’ma throw a couple thousand baby strip for this
Let me pull my camera and make a movie yeah
Starring you and me yehhh
Baby we don’t need no actresses
Let me tell you what I’m working with, I’ma break your back with this
Let me pull my camera out let’s make a movie yehhh
Starring you and me yehhh yehhh, girl

Shawty we gon make a movie
Got me lovin it when I’m feelin on the booty
Especially when I can blame it on the alcohol
Coz it do something to me
She look better than any chick in my perimeter
Sexy, I wish I could film every bit of her
Kiss her neck down to her stomach and then I’ma
Tell her we could be in a personal cinema

I let you hold the camera first and then I hold it then
Cuz I wanna see how its coming out and goin in
Let you see such a freak in me, I hope this never leak on TMZ this is 50 world star or CNN
Baby girl you kick the world off the axis
Im yo director, filming you for practice
And you know I think you a hell of an actress
Especially when I’m shooting you on a matress
Shawty straight to the top that’s where we headed
And I’ma see my name in the credits
And be the (stuff) if you let it
See somethin that you not really feelin
Then we can always go back and make an edit
I’ll be sippin on Patron platinum
She knew about the rapping
But didn’t know I’d be on acting
Now a personal reality show
So then, get the tape in, get the cameras in (oh oh oh ohhh)

Baby we don’t need no script for this
I’ma throw a couple thousand baby strip for this
Let me pull my camera and make a movie yeah
Starring you and me yeah
Baby we don’t need no actresses
Let me tell you what I’m working with, I’ma break your back with this
Let me pull my camera out let’s make a movie yeah
Starring you and me yeah yeah
Girl.

Our children expect to be able to do certain things as the grow up, buy alcohol and cigarettes, have certain rites of passage like having sex and acting out on their 18th birthday. Let’s not pass up the people our children look up to.

I’m wondering how long it has been since you looked at your child’s film and audio library. You may be fueling a full blown rebellion by supplying them with the very things that are giving them the idea that you are old and stupid. And wouldn’t you feel foolish if you had bought something that you would hate for your child to have and then handed it to them. Ask yourself about the clothes you’ve bought, the music and videos you’ve bought. How is that working out for you? So, do I believe that rap and rock need to be pulled off the shelves? Heck no. I listen to it myself! I talk to my nephews and nieces about everything. If you are old enough to ask the question, I give them the answers. If I see that they are listening to this or watching that, I follow up, download the lyrics or view it for myself. I try to provide things that I feel are substantial and supporting. I do not recoil or judge the choices they make. But I am not ignorant of the things they get into. If I thought they were doing something that I thought would do them harm, I would deal with it directly. I am not without a rudder; I just don’t want to be their conscience. I point out the lyrics, I ask questions, and I am nosey to a fault. I am fearless and without shame. I don’t even pretend to know it all, but I can look things up, and I don’t mind awkward conversations.
