SummerStage Festival continues ‘Women Who Weave,’ ‘The Jungle Book Kids’ shows

Women Who Weave sensory bagsThe School of Theatre at Stephen F. Austin State University continues to present its SummerStage Festival through July 8 in Kennedy Auditorium on the SFA campus. This year’s festival features “Women Who Weave,” a comedy for young audiences, and “The Jungle Book Kids” musical. Students will present “sensory-friendly” performances of “Women Who Weave” July 6 and 8 at 10 a.m.; and July 7 at 6:30 p.m. These performances are aimed at providing a comfortable theatre experience for people on the autism spectrum and with other neurodiverse conditions, offering audience members “sensory” bags containing materials that can help them better navigate the performance and the space. The bags have ear muffs to buffer loud noises, a communication deck (a set of cards with pictures and words used to communicate needs to others), fidget toys and sanitizing wipes, among other items. Putting the bags together are Connor Molen, Ponder sophomore; and Olivia Cantrell, Brenham junior. “The Jungle Book Kids” will continue its run at 10 a.m. July 7; and at 6:30 p.m. July 6 and 8. General admission tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students/youth. To purchase tickets, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or access finearts.sfasu.edu/purchase. For more information about SummerStage, visit theatre.sfasu.edu.

SFA’s RAISE Center collaborating on book series

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Research Advancing Identities and Student Experiences is partnering with Information Age Publishing to host a new textbook series titled “Identity and Practice in Higher Education-Student Affairs.”

The series is meant to address critical issues in both higher education and student affairs to contextualize how they relate to the development of college student identity. The first project in the text series, “Working While Black: The Untold Stories of a Student Affairs Practitioner,” featured curated narratives about the experiences of Black student affairs professionals in higher education.

“A second volume is under development because of the success of the first one, which made a significant impact on elucidating professionals’ experiences in higher education,” said Dr. Pietro A. Sasso, SFA RAISE Center director and an assistant professor of human services and educational leadership.

Sasso coordinates the book series with co-editor Dr. Shelley Price-Williams of the University of Northern Iowa. The series will be housed and directed within the RAISE Center as a component of its overall mission.

“We’re excited to establish this partnership as we continue to serve the global academic community with high-quality research projects from around the world,” said George Johnson, president of Information Age Publishing.

The RAISE Center was established in spring 2022 to “revivify research and outreach about college students and explore how identity develops through their formative college experiences.”
