(May 8, 2023): The Nacogdoches Police Department has completed its preliminary investigation into the Homicide that occurred on May 6, 2023 in the 700 block of Rock Oak St. Initially when officers arrived to the residence they found Brandon Horton 34 years of age from Nacogdoches, Tx inside the residence suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. During the course of the investigation it was determined the adult female resident was inside the house with an adult male friend prior to Brandon coming to the residence. Brandon did not live at this residence. When no one would come to the door after knocking Brandon used a large metal object to break down the door. Once inside, while still carrying the large metal object, Brandon broke down a bedroom door where the male was attempting to hide. The male discharged his firearm striking Brandon. The resident and male friend both called 911 immediately after the shooting. Both subjects were questioned by investigators and have fully cooperated with the investigation. No charges have been filed. As a matter of protocol the case will be forwarded to the Nacogdoches District Attorney’s Office for presentation to the grand jury.

Survey shows high career placement rate, positive trends for SFA graduates
Nearly 90% of Stephen F. Austin State University’s May 2022 graduating class reported positive career outcomes within six months of graduation, according to a class-specific survey conducted by the university’s Center for Career and Professional Development.
The First Destination Survey is used to capture information from SFA’s new graduates within their first six months after graduation. Specifically, it looks at information related to post-graduation next steps, including whether they are working, continuing education, joining the military or another option.
The survey is meant to provide clear, concise and consistent data on the outcomes associated with SFA students as well as the national outcomes associated with a college education, according to an article on the Handshake website, the platform CCPD uses to connect students with industry professionals. For this reason, the questions in the survey are compliant with the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
The FDS is one way SFA tracks the success of students and those who help prepare them for the job market, said CCPD director Brent McLemore, “allowing us to tell their stories more completely, celebrate accordingly, and improve more effectively.”
Between self-reported student data and the CCPD’s post-graduation knowledge rate, overall survey results account for 51% of the May 2022 SFA graduating class. This is just below the previous year’s national overall rate of 55% and higher than the southwest U.S. average of 47%. The southwest region includes Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona.
From SFA’s results, 60% marked themselves as working, 29% are pursuing some form of continuing education, and less than 1% had joined the military. Of those within the working category, the average annual salary reported by SFA alumni hired within six months of graduation was $56,309. For those hired within the same time span at an hourly rate, the average salary was $44,393.
Final national results for 2022 won’t be released until the coming fall. However, McLemore and other SFA administrators were excited to see that SFA’s reported employment rate within six months of graduation was 5% higher than the 2021 national average and 14% higher than the 2021 southwest U.S. average.
“These trends are reflective of the good work our faculty members put in each day to educate our students,” McLemore said. “Their work results in students who are competitive in the job market, bringing significant value to it as potential employees. Our role at CCPD is to help students understand and communicate their value to potential employers and to facilitate connection for our students and employers in both virtual and physical spaces.”

Chris Cotton, SFA university archives and research coordinator, receives President’s Achievement Award

Chris Cotton, university archives and research coordinator at Stephen F. Austin State University, is one of eight recipients of this year’s President’s Achievement Award.
All of this and more has earned Chris Cotton, university archives and research coordinator at SFA’s East Texas Research Center in the Steen Library, one of eight President’s Achievement Awards presented this year.
“It is such an honor to be a recipient, and it is really rewarding to know that my colleagues think so highly of me,” Cotton said.
This year, Cotton is extra busy serving on the committee that’s setting the scene for SFA’s centennial celebrations.
“The university’s upcoming centennial is something that is very exciting to be able to participate in directly,” he said. “As a historian and archivist, I firmly believe an understanding and recognition of the past will help SFA successfully move forward for our next 100 years.”
From 2016 to 2018, Cotton worked as an ETRC graduate assistant. In 2019, he was hired as the center’s archives associate. By 2022, he was the university archives and research coordinator managing ETRC’s student workers, several of whom have gone on to work in libraries or pursue a graduate education in library science.
The secret to his success is customer satisfaction, according to one of his nominations.
“Chris gives every researcher his maximum attention. Whether it is a student, faculty member or community member, I am impressed by the lengths to which he goes each and every time to make sure they get the most from their archival experience. He is adept at figuring out exactly what a person is looking for and then finding the information in the depths of the ETRC.”
Cotton said he believes that connecting ETRC patrons with the past in a tangible, hands-on way through archival materials can help them more fully connect with the past.
“In addition, helping our patrons find that missing piece of information or that story that brings all of their research together is incredibly rewarding,” he said.
Cotton works closely with professors to design archival visits and projects to improve undergraduate student learning and retention. For example, he has collaborated with Dr. Michael Martin, SFA professor of English and creative writing, for the past two years to help students with their projects in Martin’s New-Lumberjack Experience honors course.
“The success of these projects and my students has greatly depended on all the time, energy and effort of Chris Cotton,” Martin said. “The students sense his interest, and they engage him every time they are in the archives.”
For this class, Cotton takes time from his regular duties to introduce students to the archives, help them choose research topics and work with them throughout their entire projects.
“Each day that my class is in the library, Chris makes himself available to the students, always looking for new and additional materials they may request,” Martin said. “After the students have gathered the research and built their posters, Chris attends the Honors Research Symposium, listens to the students practice their talks, and offers encouragement and suggestions.”
Cotton has become a go-to staff member when students need help in general, according to another nomination.
“Random students have started to come to Chris to get help with various types of research outside the archival realm or ask him to read their papers before they turn them in.”
Cotton said he’s happy to help anyone working on historical topics.
“The best part of my job is being surrounded by history every day and getting to share that history with the community.”
