An exhibition of works by the Woodworkers Club of East Texas is showing through Aug. 10 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University’s historic downtown gallery.
Woodworkers Club of East Texas is an organization for people who have an interest in woodworking and desire to nurture, share and expand their knowledge, to provide their skills in support of public woodworking projects for the common good and to promote the practices of woodworking through public education, according to information at the club’s website. The group meets the first Saturday of each month in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Forestry Laboratories.
The exhibition “Renewed and Reclaimed” was organized by Dr. David L Kulhavy, professor of forestry, geospatial science and environmental science in SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, and Dr. David A. Lewis, professor of art history in SFA’s School of Art; curated by Weelynd McMullan, lecturer and exhibition coordinator in the School of Art; with photography by Joshua Moore. A closing reception is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at The Cole Art Center, 329 E. Main St.
The exhibition is supported by the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and School of Art. Admission is free.

(July 31, 2024): Around 9:14 p.m. on July 30, 2024, Nacogdoches Police began receiving multiple 911 calls about gunshots being heard in the area of Pearl St. and California St. Officers arrived in the area and found a residence in the 400 block of W. California St. that had been struck multiple times by gunfire. Officers entered the residence to check on the welfare of anyone inside the residence. Inside the residence, officers discovered an adult hispanic male inside the residence that was deceased from what is believed to be a gunshot wound. The Justice of the Peace responded to the scene and an autopsy has been ordered. The Criminal Investigation Division along with the Patrol Division spent most of the night processing the crime scene and collecting evidence. This is an active investigation and as further information becomes available it will be released. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the Nacogdoches Police Department at 936-559-2607.

Dr. Scott Coleman, clinical associate professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry and Stephen F. Austin State University alumnus and former regent, will give the commencement address during SFA’s graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, in Johnson Coliseum.
Coleman received a bachelor’s degree in biology from SFA in 1980 and graduated first in his class from UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry with a doctorate in dental surgery.
A member of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Coleman also is an Eagle Scout, a third-degree black belt in hapkido, first-degree black belt in taekwondo, and an avid college basketball fan. He spends his free time training for Run Disney half-marathons with his three grown children.
To attend commencement, attendees 5 years and older must have a ticket to enter Johnson Coliseum. Tickets are free and will help university officials ensure the venue is not overcrowded. A limited number of tickets per each graduate candidate is available and must be reserved in advance by the candidate.
The public also is invited to attend, and community tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis at the coliseum ticket office one hour before the ceremony begins.
Degrees to be awarded include 230 bachelor’s, 82 master’s and six doctoral degrees. More than 50 students will graduate with honors, including 19 cum laude, 16 magna cum laude and 20 summa cum laude. Two students will graduate with the university scholar designation.
