Nacogdoches Texas has been chosen as the site for the East Texas Governor’s Small Business Forum to be held on August 15th, 2019 at a site to be announced.

Members of the East Texas small business community will be invited to attend this one day event that will provide small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with timely, relevant, actionable advice on how to start, operate, grow and sustain their businesses. According to C. Wayne Mitchell, President and CEO of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, “The program will address a variety of topics that have been identified about the needs, challenges and opportunities of doing business in East Texas.”

The Forum is a collaborative project involving the Texas Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Texas Workforce Commission and several East Texas organizations including the Angelina College Small Business Development Center; Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau; Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce; Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO) and the Texas Forest Country Partnership.

Larissa Philpot, President & CEO of Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO) is excited about the Forum being held in Nacogdoches. “The East Texas Governor’s Small Business Forum will be a unique opportunity for local entrepreneurs and small business owners to gain access to resources and expert advice on business solutions. Small businesses are the backbone of Nacogdoches, and NEDCO is committed to supporting these businesses in all stages, from the startup process, to the acceleration and growth stage. NEDCO is thankful for the governor’s interest in bringing resources to East Texas businesses. The Nacogdoches community is like no other, featuring prime locations for meetings and events. We are proud to showcase what we have to offer, and be recognized by the highest office in Texas.”

Sponsor opportunities are available to support the Forum and exhibit space will be available on a limited basis.

The event will feature private and public small business resources, practical solutions, best practices and expert assistance on a broad range of business topics and challenges. It is also an opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, and business-oriented non-profits, as well as local, regional, state and federal agencies.
The Angelina College SBDC Director Larry Cain is also involved with the effort and looks forward to a productive Forum. “The Angelina College Small Business Development Center is excited to partner with other local organizations to present the Governor’s Small Business Forum,” Cain said. “The Forum will feature a variety of valuable resources for prospective and current entrepreneurs in East Texas. Don’t miss this event!”

SFA’s combined choirs, orchestra to present ‘War and Peace’ concert

The combined choirs and orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “War and Peace” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Conducted by Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA, the masterwork concert features Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem.”

“The subjects of war and peace have always occupied the great themes of literature and music,” Murphy said. “From the Old Testament and the epic stories of Homer and Virgil down to the writings of many 19th and 20th century authors like Walt Whitman and Wilfred Owen, the emotional and physical turmoil of war and the hope of peace emerge as leading preoccupations of the human race.

“As in literature, war and peace in music is often conveyed either through the glorious exploits of conquests or the realistic brutality that war brings to all,” he said. “That stark duality is explored in our concert.”

Murphy directs SFA’s A Cappella Choir; Dr. Todd Fish, associate director of choral activities, directs the Men’s Choir and Women’s Choir; and Dr. Pierre-Alain Chevalier, visiting director of orchestral activities, directs the Orchestra of the Pines.

Soloists include voice faculty members Prof. Debbie Berry, Prof. Nita Hudson, Dr. Ric Berry, Dr. Scott LaGraff and Dr. Chris Turner.

Prior to the concert, a lecture will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in the Griffith Art Gallery (FA 208) by Dr. Samantha Inman, assistant professor of music theory, and Dr. Jamie Weaver, associate professor of music history. The gallery is located across the hall from Turner Auditorium.

The concert is a joint presentation of the College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.

SFA Regents appoint screening committee to work with presidential search firm

An eight-member screening committee will assist with the evaluation of presidential candidates for Stephen F. Austin State University. The committee will work with the Dallas-based executive search firm R. William Funk & Associates, hired during a recent meeting of the SFA board.

“The selection of the next president of SFA is the responsibility of the Board of Regents, and in accordance with the Board’s Rules and Regulations, we will consider candidates whose names are brought forward by the committee,” said Brigettee Henderson, chair of the Board of Regents.

In addition to Regents Nelda Blair, secretary; Alton Frailey, vice chair; and Henderson, screening committee members include Dr. Jason Reese, assistant professor of management and marketing and chair of the SFA Faculty Senate; Erma Nieto Brecht, executive director of enrollment management; Jeffrey Agouna-Deciat, president of SFA’s Student Government Association; Charlotte Ashcraft, president-elect of the SFA Alumni Association and vice president of Commercial Bank of Texas; and Robert Flores, CFO of Elliott Electric.

“This group is inclusive and reflective of the SFA community, and we appreciate the willingness of each committee member to serve in this important role,” Henderson said.

The late Dr. Baker Pattillo served as president of SFA from 2006 through 2018.
