Brave Space Series at SFA to showcase ‘Bound to Repeat’

The Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Multicultural Affairs will present “Bound to Repeat,” the second installment in its Brave Space Series of the spring semester, at 4 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center’s Multimedia Room.

Each series has a specific area of focus. The Brave Space Series provides a forum for open and honest discussion concerning difficult topics. This meeting will emphasize the ways in which people are often disconnected not only with history but also with one another.

“The more we continue to fall into the same patterns, the more our society will become desensitized to the issues we face,” said Andrea Flores, OMA student ambassador. “The result can cause us to become uncaring toward our fellow human beings, especially when the issues do not directly affect us.”

Flores said that through the discussion, she hopes participants will learn how to remain connected in a world that often moves from one injustice to another in a matter of days.

The discussion is free and open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities. For more information, visit www.sfasu.edu/multicultural/480.asp.

OMA to host third annual Women’s Empowerment Summit

Recent gender-based social movements, including #MeToo and #TimesUp, will give added weight to the Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Multicultural Affairs upcoming third annual Women’s Empowerment Summit, slated for Friday, March 8, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Veronica Beavers, OMA director, said that while organizers did not directly address the movements in planning for the event, these and other similar themes will be mentioned in keynote addresses and various breakout sessions.

“The summit was created to empower women and educate the community on women’s issues,” Beavers said. “During this summit, we invite participants to develop relationships with others who strive to make an impact, learn professional development skills, discuss current issues for women today, learn how to improve personal wellness and much more. Regardless of gender, everyone can benefit from this summit.”

The event will host two keynote speakers, Binta Brown and Victoria White.

Brown is a dual career and recruitment consultant at the University of Texas at Austin where she spearheads the SmartHire program, a campus search committee that assists with the recruitment and selection process for executive or hard-to-fill positions. She will present “Navigating the Evolution of Work: The Gig Economy” to open the summit.

White holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and public relations. She worked in the nonprofit sector for six years as a victim rights advocate and is now a college admissions counselor. White will discuss leadership in its various forms as the summit’s lunch speaker.

Event check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. March 8. The opening keynote presentation will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a breakout session at 10 a.m. The lunch keynote will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and will be followed by two more breakout sessions. Presenters are a mix of faculty, staff and community members.

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch is provided, but seats are limited. Registration can be completed online at sfasu.edu/oma. The deadline to register is March 4.

The Texas Main Street Program (TMSP) of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized The Nacogdoches Main Street Program for successful annual progress in carrying out national performance standards for a Main Street community. The Nacogdoches Main Street Program is one of 68 to be recommended this year.

Upon final approval by the National Main Street Center/Main Street America™, these local programs will be announced as nationally accredited during the Main Street Now conference March 25-27 in Seattle, Wash.

“Since 1981, many Texas communities have participated in the Main Street network and used its preservation-based framework to generate positive economic gains for their local economies and the state,” said THC Executive Director Mark Wolfe. “These positive strides happen because of local commitment to prioritize historic downtowns.”

To achieve accreditation, local programs provide evidence of annual progress under selection criteria including engaged partnerships, staffing, volunteer efforts, preservation ethic, physical improvements in the district, and growth in program capacity. The state office also works with programs throughout the year providing services catered to local needs.

“The annual reporting process recognizes the hard work of local programs, and we commend the dedication of city leaders, program staff, local volunteers, and partners who make it possible,” said Debra Drescher, TMSP state coordinator.

The TMSP began in 1981 as one of the first state-coordinating programs in the country. Local Main Street programs focus on responsibly utilizing a community’s historic assets for economic benefit and increased quality of life. During 2018, more than $180 million was reinvested into Texas’ 89 Main Street districts. Additionally, 427 small businesses and 1,480 jobs were created. During 2018, the state network reached an important milestone when $4 billion in historical reinvestment was reached and surpassed.

The application to become a Main Street community will be available in late February. Applications are due July 31, 2019.
