Police: MAYOR PROCLAIMS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK

Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn has proclaimed February 20-26, 2011 as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Nacogdoches. The proclamation is in recognition of Texas Severe Awareness Week, which is sponsored by the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.

The purpose of Severe Weather Awareness Week is to encourage citizens to educate themselves and to prepare for severe weather events. Some examples of severe weather in East Texas include tornadoes, straight line winds, flooding, severe thunderstorms and hail storms.

“As we enter into the spring severe weather season, it is important that the public be aware of the threats, and have a knowledge of how to react to them”, said Sgt. Greg Sowell, Nacogdoches Emergency Management Public Information officer.

Educational information on severe weather events may be obtained on the National Weather Service website at www.srh.noaa.gov or the Federal Emergency Management Agency at www.fema.gov.
