The Fredonia Hotel was named winner of the Best Renovation/Rehabilitation award for a community with a population under 50,000. The Texas Downtown Association (TDA) sponsors the annual awards program that recognizes outstanding projects, places, and people from across the state.
The Best Renovation/Rehabilitation category recognizes excellence rehabilitation (i.e., renovation or remodeling) of interior or exterior of an existing building. Rehabilitation is the process of returning a property to a state of utility, through repair or alteration, while preserving those portions and features of the property that are significant to its historic, architectural, and cultural values. Rehabilitation focuses on the historic materials and features, finishes, spaces, and spatial relationships that give a property its historic character. The building may be historic (over 50 years old) or non-historic.
Judges thought the renovation was stunning and were thrilled that this mid-century modern gem was brought back to life. The hotel was also winner of the People’s Choice awards in this category by fans of the TDA Facebook page.
The other finalists were The Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre in Downtown Brenham, Market at the Mill in Downtown Clifton, and Downtown Mount Vernon’s Watermelon Mills Coffee.
One hundred and fifteen entries were submitted in twelve different categories from communities across the state. Judges reviewed entries online and then met in person to make their final selection of award finalists and winners. The panel included: Kent Collins, Centro Development; P.A. Geddie, County Line Magazine; Lois Rodriguez, Texas Highways; and Evan Thompson, Preservation Texas.
Winners were announced on November 8 at the President’s Awards Gala held in conjunction with the 2017 Texas Downtown Conference in McKinney.
TDA was established in 1985 to connect and serve communities that are committed to downtown vitality. The membership organization is an independent, statewide nonprofit that represents cities and towns of all sizes, economic development corporations, chambers of commerce, local organizations, small businesses, and individuals.
