NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Beauty Is Embarrassing” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
“Beauty Is Embarrassing” chronicles the “vaulted highs and the crushing lows” of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art, according to Lisa Steed, interim director of galleries for SFA.
“Best known as one of the creators of the ’80s TV hit ‘Pee Wee’s Playhouse,’ artist Wayne White guides us through his life using moments from his hilarious, biographical one-man show,” Steed said. “Whether he’s parading a 20-foot tall puppet through the Tennessee hillside, romping around the Hollywood Hills dressed in his LBJ puppet suit, relaxing in his studio pickin’ his banjo or watching his children grow up much too soon, Wayne White always seems to have a youthful grin and a desperate drive to create art and objects.”
Steed described the film as having “an infectious quality that will inspire everyone to find their pleasure in life and pursue it at all costs.”
“At its core, ‘Beauty Is Embarrassing’ is a reminder that we should all follow our passion,” she said.
“Beauty Is Embarrassing” premiered at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival.
The film, directed by Neil Berkeley, is unrated and is sponsored by FVA member Karon Gillespie and the Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogodches. For more information, call (936) 468-1131.
