Barricades are meant for citizen’s safety

The 23rd Annual Texas Blueberry Festival, presented by the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, will once again transform downtown Nacogdoches into a sea of all things “blueberry.” To accommodate and ensure the safety of the 100 + vendors and 20,000 patrons descending on downtown this weekend, street closures in the downtown district will be taking place.

Nacogdoches residents and downtown businesses should be prepared to use alternate routes starting Friday, June 8th at 5 p.m., through Saturday, June 9th at 8 p.m. Main Street (SH21) will be closed from Mound Street to North Street/South Street (Business 59). Feeder streets such as Church Street, Pilar and S. Fredonia will also be closed in the downtown district. In addition S. Pecan Street and Fredonia Street will be closed to thru traffic inside the gates at Festival Plaza in historic downtown Nacogdoches. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during this time and to have their vehicles out of the downtown area by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 8th.

“We are excited for this weekend’s Blueberry Festivities, and want to ensure the safety of everyone who comes downtown to enjoy the event,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien. “The Nacogdoches Police Department does an outstanding job of keeping our citizens safe; however it is imperative that our citizens respect the use of barricades.” The City of Nacogdoches uses barricades to close certain thoroughfares during events such as the Texas Blueberry Festival. Barricades are never intended to be moved except by police officers or special event personnel. Barricades are used to prevent traffic from driving through an event area, during both setup and tear down, to ensure the safety of attendees, vendors, and spectators. Please under no circumstance move a barricade or drive around a closed gate. Moving of barricades is a violation of state traffic law and you can receive a citation. Alternative routes are always available.

The 2012 Texas Blueberry Festival is scheduled for this Saturday, June 9, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information or questions regarding the street closure you can contact the Nacogdoches Main Street Office at 936-559-2573 or via email at obriens@ci.nacogdoches.tx.us.
