The Nacogdoches Police Department is currently investigating a telephone scam that is active in the area.
Some local residents have received calls from persons claiming to be a family member that is in jail or trouble in another town. The callers represent themselves as the attorney for the person incarcerated, and in one instance, as the family member.
The callers then request money to be wired to another location, usually out of state.
The callers have information about the intended victims, such as addresses, telephone numbers, and names of family members. This information is easily obtained on the internet.
Persons receiving such calls should stop and verify the authenticity of the call by contacting another family member, or by calling authorities in the location where the relative claims to be in jail. Telephone numbers for the authorities should be obtained from another source other than the person telephoning originally.
