The City of Nacogdoches and Mayor Roger Van Horn are hosting another installment of Coffee with the Mayor on Thursday, April 26, 2012. The event will be held in the City Council Chambers from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., located at 202 E. Pilar Street. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Discussions concerning traffic issues and possible solutions, specifically the intersection of E. Austin and Raquet streets.
Coffee with the Mayor allows citizens a chance to offer fresh ideas and workable solutions on ways to improve Nacogdoches in a less formal setting than a City Council meeting. In addition to Mayor Roger Van Horn, City Staff, including City Manager Jim Jeffers, City Engineer Steve Bartlett, and City Planner Larissa Philpot will be on hand to discuss various traffic related issues. “The City’s traffic committee in conjunction with TXDOT has been looking at workable solutions to help ease congestion in the Raguet area for some time,” said City Manager Jim Jeffers. “We are hopeful that this meeting will bring about some positive solutions to this problem.” One possible solution is a Roundabout, which has recently proven effective in cities across the State.
The intersection of E. Austin and Raquet, which lies in a residential district, is unique because of its proximity to both Raguet Elementary and the SFA Charter School, and warrants a unique solution. A Roundabout is a type of circular intersection in which road traffic flows in one direction around a central island. Roundabouts were once only utilized in the UK, but their effectiveness has led to the development of them nationwide and in Texas in recent years. The Nacogdoches Police Department is currently conducting a traffic survey, including pedestrian counts at the E. Austin and Raquet intersection.
