SFA bands to present joint concert

The Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony of Stephen F. Austin State University will present a joint band concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The Symphonic Band will perform a program of international music, and the Wind Symphony’s selections all relate to angels and demons.

Under the direction of Tamey Anglley, SFA assistant director of bands, the Symphonic Band will open the concert with John Wasson’s “American Fanfare,” and graduate student Justin Allen of Spring will guest conduct Percy Grainger’s “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon.”

The Symphonic Band’s final piece will be Franco Cesarini’s “Greek Folk Song Suite,” a three-movement work based on three ancient Greek folk songs.

To begin its “Angels and Demons” program, the Wind Symphony will perform Walter Hartley’s “Angel Band,” a three-movement suite based on 18th and 19th century American hymn tunes. It will be guest conducted by Wylie graduate student Holly Royster.

Under the direction of David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, the Wind Symphony will also present David Gillingham’s “Be Thou My Vision” and “Profanation,” the second movement of Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphony No. 1: Jeremiah.”

“‘Profanation’ is the scherzo movement of the symphony and is intended to depict the chaos and destruction brought about by the pagan corruption within the Jewish priesthood and people,” explained Campo.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Turner Auditorium is located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Drive.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please go to www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
