The City of Nacogdoches Main Street office wants to announce that next Saturday, June 18th the standard parade route through the historic downtown district will be changed to accommodate a TXDOT road construction project on Main Street. “We had to make some slight changes to the standard parade route this year, to ensure the safety of the parade participants and spectators. Kudos to our Police, Street, and Engineering Departments for working together to come up with an alternative safe route,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.
The Juneteenth Parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th, 2011. Parade line up will remain located around TJR Elementary school. Entries can begin lining up at approximately 9 a.m. The parade will start at the corner of Mound and Arnold street, continue southbound on Mound street until it reaches Main Street where it will then turn west and remain westbound on Main street through the heart of downtown until it reaches Pecan street. The parade will then head north on Pecan street until it reaches Hospital street where it will remain for a short east distance before it heads to Fredonia street to take participants back to the staging area.
Spectators are encouraged to enjoy the route anywhere on Main Street between mound and Pecan, as well as on Mound street from TJR elementary to Main street. “The main difference between this route and our standard parade route is the direction and elimination of Lanana streets. We are confident the parade will be as enjoyable as always for participants and spectators,” said O’Brien.
The annual Juneteenth celebration will then take place in Festival Plaza, spectators are encouraged to join GETCAP head Start and the Nacogdoches Progressive Leadership Group beginning at 12 p.m. as they celebrate our rich heritage with great food, festivities and fun.
