Despite the overwhelming youth on the Stephen F. Austin men’s 1,600-meter relay team, it was talented enough to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. The team, which consists of three freshmen and a senior, clocked a time of 3:08.76 to qualify.
Senior Donavon Sammons and freshmen Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder and Cass Brown posted the qualify mark that bested team’s from the Pac 10, Big 12 and Mountain West Conferences. Hawkins opened the race, and the ‘Jacks closed out the event with Brown running the anchor leg.
Junior Nick McCloud advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal heat in the men’s 110-meter hurdles but came up just short in advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. McCloud posted a time of 13.93 to finish 15th overall.
Freshman Jamal Peden closed out his rookie season Saturday afternoon in the triple jump. Peden recorded a mark of 49-9.00 to finish 26th overall. The ‘Jacks 400-meter relay team just missed a qualifying time, clocking a 41.25 to finish 17th overall. Freshman Clint Harris finished 35th overall in the men’s discus throw. He recorded a mark of 160-4.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place Wednesday, June 8th through Saturday, June 11th, in Des Moines, Iowa.
