Approximately 30 different kinds of objects that produce noise when struck, shaken, rubbed or scraped will be used during the SFA Percussion Ensemble’s annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Cole Concert Hall.
“The numerous pieces included on the program call for over 15 different kinds of drums (including boo-bams, which we made ourselves using drumheads and 8-inch tubes); five different keyboard instruments such as the marimba, xylophone and bells; small hand-held traditional instruments such as the triangle and tambourine; and even some non-traditional noise makers,” said Scott Harris, SFA associate professor of percussion and director of the 10-member ensemble.
“Among the chamber works (or pieces written for small groups) are Christopher Rouse’s ‘Ku-Ka-Ilimoku,’ an energetic drumming work based loosely on Hawaiian mythology, and David Gillinham’s ‘Sacrificial Rite,’ a pulse-pounding drum ensemble directed by graduate student Michael Oreka of Chesapeake, Va.,” Harris continued.
Large ensemble pieces include Tom Gauger’s “Portico,” which utilizes a large array of keyboard instruments; Ian Smith’s “Take a Stand,” a novelty work played only on music stands; Ney Rosauro’s “Concerto for Marimba,” featuring Katy freshman Nathan Poteet; and David Mancini’s “Suite for Solo Drum Set,” featuring Union Grove freshman Ronnie Godfrey.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and College of Fine Arts. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.
