Contact: Sergeant Brett Ayres, PIO- 936.559.2618, information provided by Lt. Bill Kennedy

At 1022 hours on December 7th the Nacogdoches Police Department received information from the Harris County Sheriff’s Department that a wanted person was believed to be travelling through the City of Nacogdoches. Harris County officials provided NPD officers with a suspect and suspect vehicle description. The vehicle and occupants were being sought in connection with a Homicide and Amber Alert from Harris County Texas.

NPD Field Training Officer Brad Waguespack and Recruit Officer Falynn Monk located the suspect vehicle stopped at a local business. The driver of the vehicle, Romanus Anthony Robertson III, was contacted and found to be wanted for Murder. He was taken into custody without incident. The adult female passenger was identified as Jasmine Khalil Johnson A.K.A. Jasmine Khalil Whitmore. She was found to have two outstanding warrants out of Harris County for Aggravated Assault. She was arrested as well.

The two children who had been subject of the Amber Alert were located in the vehicle. They were unharmed and in good health. Texas Child Protective Services are working on reuniting them with family.

Harris County Investigators and Detectives with the Nacogdoches Police Department are continuing to coordinate resources. Both persons arrested in connection to this stop were taken before a Nacogdoches County magistrate and waived extradition. Both Johnson and Robertson were released to the Harris County Deputies for transport back to Harris County.

This investigation is within the jurisdiction of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. Any future public information releases will be conducted by that agency.

SFA University Police Department participates in Shop with a Cop

Event benefits area children

Stephen F. Austin State University Police Department officers may not live at the North Pole or have long beards, but they are still able to help area children have a happy holiday season by participating in Shop with a Cop, an SFA and Nacogdoches County effort.

Shop with a Cop, scheduled for Dec. 10 at Walmart, is geared toward creating positive relationships with area law enforcement officers by providing a fun-filled shopping event for deserving children this holiday season.

“Through sponsorships and donations, area law enforcement officers spend time with chosen participants and grant their holiday gift list wishes,” said John Fields, chief of SFA’s University Police Department. “The officers volunteer their time and businesses and individuals sponsor the event. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

SFA faculty and staff members contributed $1,000 toward the effort, matching the $1,000 donation from Walmart. Fields said the support from the community will allow participants to have an extra special holiday season.

The department has identified 12 participants who will each receive $150 to shop with their parents and UPD officers at Walmart.

“Nacogdoches County’s poverty rate is 30.9%, according to the U.S. Census,” Fields said. “The national average is 13.1%. There are going to be many, many area children who are left out this holiday season. We want to decrease that number while also building good relationships among our fellow citizens. Shop with a Cop can help several area children’s Christmas be brighter.”

For more information about this event, contact Erika Colegio, SFA’s UPD administrative assistant, at (936) 468-2607 or email colegioe@sfasu.edu.

SFA to host five graduation ceremonies during December

Dr. Scott Gordon, president of Stephen F. Austin State University, will be commencement speaker for the university’s December ceremonies, which will be held in-person in Johnson Coliseum Dec. 11 and 12.

Dr. Scott Gordon, president of Stephen F. Austin State University, will be commencement speaker for the university’s December ceremonies, which will be held in-person in Johnson Coliseum Dec. 11 and 12.

For the first time in almost one year, students at Stephen F. Austin State University will be honored for their academic achievements during commencement ceremonies in Johnson Coliseum. To make this possible in a safe manner, the university will host its first-ever slate of five commencement ceremonies – two on Dec. 11 and three on Dec. 12.

To accommodate both physical distancing mandated by COVID-19 concerns and the construction project currently underway at the coliseum, each graduate has been allotted six tickets to provide to their guests.

“We and our students were heartbroken when we had to cancel the May and August ceremonies, so we have been planning for and looking forward to this ceremony for months,” said Dr. Scott Gordon, SFA president. “Although the coliseum aesthetics may not be ideal at this time, our safety officers have confirmed that the facility provides adequate access for our guests, even those with accessibility needs.”

Gordon will serve as commencement speaker for each ceremony. The president of SFA since August 2019, Gordon is a native of Malone, New York, and earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the State University of New York at Cortland. His master’s degree and doctorate in botany and mycology are from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Previously, Gordon served as Eastern Washington University’s provost and as a dean of the Pott College of Science, Engineering and Education at the University of Southern Indiana.

On Friday, the 3 p.m. ceremony will recognize candidates from the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, as well as graduates from May and August who requested to participate in the ceremony.

The 6 p.m. ceremony will recognize candidates from the College of Fine Arts and the College of Liberal and Applied Arts.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, candidates from the Rusche College of Business and the Department of Human Services and Educational Leadership will be recognized.

The noon ceremony will recognize candidates from the Department of Education Studies and the School of Human Sciences.

Candidates from the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science will participate in a 3 p.m. ceremony.

Degrees to be awarded include 968 bachelor’s, 122 master’s and three doctoral degrees. More than 275 students will graduate with honors, including 116 cum laude, 78 magna cum laude and 77 summa cum laude. Forty-two will graduate with the university scholar designation.

Children under age 5 do not need a ticket to attend the ceremony. Graduates can reserve guest tickets by completing the commencement registration form emailed to them.
