SFA names new assistant vice president, dean of students

diesStephen F. Austin State University has named a new assistant vice president for student affairs to serve as dean of students.

Andrew J. Dies recently served as dean of students at Northern Arizona University, where he was chief student conduct officer and the primary contact for students in crisis, in addition to serving on the emergency management team and the academic standards committee.

Dies previously served as dean of students and student affairs campus lead at the Armstrong and Liberty campuses of Georgia Southern University. During his higher education career, he has led or served on committees dedicated to student behavioral intervention, threat assessment, and Clery Act Compliance.

“We had a very strong applicant pool from this national search, and Andrew’s commitment to student success and advocacy stood out during the interview process,” said Dr. Brandon Frye, SFA vice president for student affairs. “He has demonstrated a commitment to helping students throughout his career, and we believe he will be a dynamic and collaborative leader focused on student support, well-being, safety, belonging, resilience and success.”

Dies received his Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Kansas at Lawrence and his Master of Education in higher education administration from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He is currently completing his dissertation at Georgia Southern University for a doctoral degree in educational leadership.

“I’m excited to join the SFA family,” Dies said. “The student affairs team at the university is highly talented, and I look forward to working with the great students who attend SFA.”

Dies will begin in his new role on Aug. 9, with responsibility for the development and management of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Behavioral Intervention Team, Counseling Services, Campus Recreation and Health Services. He also will provide advisement of the Student Government Association.

NACOGDOCHES POLICE HAVE MADE AN ARREST FOR MURDER

(July 25,2021): Around 7:34 a.m. officers with the Nacogdoches Police Department and Fire Personnel responded to a residence in the 2400 block of E. Starr Ave. When first responders arrived they found a 72 year old elderly victim that appeared to be deceased from an apparent assault. First responders attempted life saving measures and she was transported to the closest hospital. The victim was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The victim has been identified to be Carole Favro from Nacogdoches, Tx. A person of interest was located on scene at the time of the incident. Investigators developed probable cause during their investigation to charge the suspect with Murder in the death of the victim. The suspect has been identified to be Jared Delgado from Nacogdoches, Tx. Delgado is currently being held in the Nacogdoches County Jail. As further information becomes available it will be released.

NACOGDOCHES POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATING FATALITY ACCIDENT

(July 25,2021): The Nacogdoches Police Department is currently on scene on a fatal motor vehicle accident in the 800 block of SW Stallings Dr. Preliminary information is that a vehicle traveling northbound on the Loop struck an adult female that was walking in the roadway. The 23 year old victim from Lufkin, Texas was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital but died from her injuries. The victims identity is being held pending notification of family. All northbound traffic is being re routed. The NPD Traffic division is currently on scene conducting an investigation. Expect delays and try and avoid the area. As further information becomes available it will be released.

NACOGDOCHES POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATING DROWNING

(July 23, 2021): Around 6:17 p.m. the Nacogdoches Police Department along with the Nacogdoches Fire Department and EMS responded to the 400 block of N. University Dr in response to a 911 call of a child not breathing. When officers arrived CPR was being administered by lifeguards to a 3 year old child that was found unresponsive in a pool. EMS transported the child to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. The child was later transferred to an out of town hospital in serious condition for a higher level of care. There is no further information on the child’s condition. An investigation into the circumstances of the drowning has begun by our detectives. As further information becomes available it will be released.
