SFA’s Rusche Ambassadors Program launched to strengthen student recruitment, engagement efforts

The Nelson Rusche College of Business at Stephen F. Austin State University has launched the Rusche Ambassadors Program, a student leadership initiative designed to enhance recruitment efforts, elevate the visitor experience and strengthen student engagement within the college. Pictured are the 11 students selected for the program along with their program advisor, John Chambers, back row, far right.

The Nelson Rusche College of Business at Stephen F. Austin State University has launched the Rusche Ambassadors Program, a student leadership initiative designed to enhance recruitment efforts, elevate the visitor experience and strengthen student engagement within the college.

“The Rusche Ambassadors Program exemplifies how the Rusche College of Business advances its mission of ‘learn, launch, lead,'” said Dr. Jason Reese, interim dean of the college. “Through this experiential learning initiative, students develop meaningful leadership skills while gaining practical experience. The program not only supports students in launching their own careers but also strengthens the college’s ability to tell its story to prospective students and external partners throughout the region.”

Rusche Ambassadors serve as representatives of the college at recruitment events, including college tours, high school visits, college fairs and other outreach activities. During these events, they provide prospective students and their families with a firsthand look at the academic programs, facilities, culture and opportunities available in the Rusche College of Business.

“After three years of being an RCOB student, I feel like I truly know this community and what makes it special,” said Rory Price, a senior entrepreneurship major from Edgewood who was selected for the program. “I had people who showed me how impactful this place could be for me, and I want to be that same supportive presence for prospective and future students who are exploring what Rusche can do for them.”

In addition to Price, the following 10 students representing a variety of business disciplines and backgrounds were selected for the program:

• Annie Johnston, junior economics major from Minneapolis, Minnesota
• Brandon Joest, sophomore international business major from Houston
• Bre Stephenson, junior accounting major from La Porte
• Erin Lewis, sophomore finance major from Houston
• Kai Hudson, sophomore accounting major from Canton
• Kainen Leon, sophomore general business major from Fort Worth
• Kendall Kindred, sophomore marketing major from Dallas
• Reed O’Grady, senior management major from Weatherford
• Sofia Ramirez, junior finance major from Baytown
• Zala Ule, business graduate student from Koper, Slovenia

Ambassadors participate in comprehensive training at the beginning of each semester, including a full-day retreat focused on professionalism, communication and public speaking. The retreat also features an in-depth overview of the college’s majors, minors, certificates, experiential learning opportunities and student support services. This training ensures ambassadors are well prepared to represent the college accurately and confidently.

“The Rusche Ambassadors serve as the first point of contact for many prospective students and families,” said John Chambers, program advisor and recruiting and marketing specialist for the Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship. “By equipping students with the knowledge to confidently share information about our programs and resources, we are creating a more engaging and informative recruitment experience while also investing in the development of our current students.”

Beyond recruitment, Rusche Ambassadors support student retention and success. They also represent the college at events with corporate partners, donors, alumni and community stakeholders. In these settings, ambassadors serve as professional representatives of the college and help strengthen relationships with external partners.

The program also emphasizes leadership development and professional growth. Through their involvement, ambassadors gain hands-on experience in communication, customer service and university representation, all of which translate directly to future careers in business and leadership roles beyond graduation.

SFA’s inaugural Allied Health Professionals Conference slated for Feb. 6

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Allied Health Studies will host the inaugural Allied Health Professionals Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The conference brings together students and professionals from fields across occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, dietetics and other allied health fields for a day of interdisciplinary growth. Through expert-led workshops and real-world scenarios, attendees will explore modern, team-based patient care while building valuable connections across the allied health community.

The conference will include evidence-based practices across various fields, including sessions on informed consent in patient care, artificial intelligence applications in nutrition, reproductive health and exercise, media engagement for practitioners and more.

“The Department of Allied Health Studies is thrilled to offer the inaugural Allied Health Professionals Conference at SFA,” said Sarah Drake, clinical instructor in the Department of Allied Health Studies. “This conference creates a shared space for students, educators and allied health professionals to connect across disciplines. Through dynamic panel discussions, networking opportunities and a robust sponsor expo with over 10 booths, the event reflects the collaborative spirit and growing impact of allied health in our region. We would like thank our generous sponsors and the university for making this event possible.”

Building on the success of last year’s East Region Winter Seminar, offered by the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, organizers anticipate that more than 200 registered attendees will benefit from the interdisciplinary approach to health.

Registered dietitians and speech-language pathologists can register for $75 through Feb. 4. Faculty members and professionals not receiving continuing professional education credits may register for a half day at $25, or a full day for $35. Registration is free for students.

SFA’s Department of Biology to host Darwin Day

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Biology is set to celebrate Darwin Day at noon Feb. 12 in the Kennedy Auditorium with special guest speaker Dr. James Albert from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Biology is set to celebrate Darwin Day at noon Feb. 12 in the Kennedy Auditorium with special guest speaker Dr. James Albert from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Albert is a leading zoologist and evolutionary ecologist whose research focuses on the diversity and evolution of tropical freshwater fish. Using morphological and phylogenetic approaches, his work explores how fish species evolve over time. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and is a recognized expert on Neotropical electric fish. Together with his colleagues, Albert has described 50 new fish species to date.

“We are delighted to have Dr. James Albert join us for this special event as we celebrate, remember and reflect on the contributions of both Darwin and the vital work of scientists across all disciplines,” said Dr. Carmen Montaña-Schalk, associate professor of biology.

During the event, Albert will present “Ecology and evolution of Amazonian fishes: Assembling the most diverse continental vertebrate assemblage.”

The presentation examines how South America’s freshwater fish became the most diverse vertebrate fauna on Earth. Based on the book “Ecology and Evolution of Amazonian Fishes,” it brings together new evolutionary, ecological and geological data to test leading ideas about how this remarkable diversity arose.

SFA honors distinguished alumnus with School of Theatre and Dance renaming

Stephen F. Austin State University officially renamed its School of Theatre and Dance to the Denard Haden School of Theatre and Dance as a result of a transformative monetary commitment from 1959 alumna and Haden’s niece, Priscilla “Prissy” Abshier Sliva, pictured. The name change is effective immediately and was approved by The University of Texas System Board of Regents during an executive session in November.

In recognition of a career that has shaped the performing arts and inspired generations of artists, Stephen F. Austin State University officially renamed its School of Theatre and Dance to the Denard Haden School of Theatre and Dance in honor of Haden, celebrating a legacy of creative achievement and a deep, enduring connection to the university. The name change is effective immediately and was approved by The University of Texas System Board of Regents.

The name change comes as a result of a transformative monetary commitment from 1959 alumna and Haden’s niece, Priscilla “Prissy” Abshier Sliva. The generous commitment will enhance programmatic efforts and honor and commemorate the legacy of her uncle.

Haden, a beloved SFA alumnus and faculty member, established the university’s dance program and was widely known for his creative vision and innovative choreography. He taught dance classes, choreographed musicals and introduced groundbreaking techniques that continue to influence dance and drill teams to this day. His gift for staging and movement left a lasting impression on generations of performers and students.

“My uncle’s influence can still be seen and felt today — not just within our family, but across this area and beyond,” Sliva said. “To see his name recognized in a way that honors his legacy at SFA means so much to me.”

The name change follows the university’s recent announcement of the College of Health Professions, which is part of a broader academic reorganization. Together, these initiatives underscore SFA’s ongoing commitment to addressing the evolving needs of students, employers and the East Texas region.

“From her beginnings as a transfer student from Kilgore College to her success as an entrepreneur and her generosity as a philanthropist, Prissy Sliva’s story reflects the full arc of opportunity that defines Stephen F. Austin State University,” said Dr. Neal Weaver, SFA president. “By honoring her uncle’s legacy through this transformative gift, she is helping ensure that the finest performing arts experiences remain accessible to students, families and communities across East Texas for generations to come.”

Dr. Gary Wurtz, dean of SFA’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts, said he is grateful to Sliva for her generosity and vision.

“Her gift not only supports the continued excellence of our theatre and dance programs but also honors a legacy that helped shape the foundation of dance education in East Texas,” Wurtz said.

Prior to becoming a faculty member in 1960, Haden first arrived on campus in 1927 as a transfer student from Rice Institute, now Rice University, where he majored in English and took his first dance lessons. A natural talent, he quickly advanced to serving as an assistant instructor. After his family relocated to Nacogdoches, Haden opened a dance studio while continuing his studies at SFA, earning his English degree in 1929. Following graduation, he taught English and served as principal at Corrigan High School during the week, while offering dance lessons on weekends. Committed to refining his skills, he spent summers studying with renowned dance figures such as Mary Wigman, Sergei Lifar, Alicia Alonso and Eduardo Cansino.

After five years, Haden fully committed to dance as his profession. He expanded his teaching beyond Nacogdoches to Henderson in 1934 and later to Kilgore, where demand for his classes continued to grow. In Kilgore, Haden made history as the first choreographer for the Kilgore College Rangerettes, working alongside founder Gussie Nell Davis to create the precision-based style that defined the world’s first drill team. His choreography and original show themes became iconic, and much of the terminology he developed is still used by drill teams today. The production number performed by the Rangerettes as a finale for the Rangerette Revels each year has always been described as, “purely Mr. Haden!” Through his vision, he transformed dance – taking it from the stage to the football field – and changed the trajectory of American performance culture.

Sliva also has made donations for two prominent naming components within the Griffith Fine Arts Building — the Denard Haden Performance Hall and the Denard Haden Dance Studio. Along with transformational donations to the university, Sliva also has supported local churches, businesses and scholarship initiatives, reflecting her belief in education and service.
