Shows at The Art Center provide spring break fun

Although the majority of the college students have left town and faculty are enjoying some time off, Stephen F. Austin State University’s downtown art gallery will maintain its regular hours during spring break.

“Currently on display at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House are two fascinating exhibitions,” said Lisa Steed, SFA interim director of galleries. “Upstairs in the Reavley Gallery, visitors can see glass-tiled murals come to life in ‘Rufus Butler Seder: LIFETILES.’ Viewers of ‘The Edge of Life: Forest Pathology Art’ can learn about diseases that attack our forests and see artists’ interpretations of the pathogens, or agents of the diseases.”

The murals included in Seder’s exhibition are composed of 3-pound, 8-inch square, lens-ribbed glass tiles the optical artist and filmmaker invented to fulfill his dream of creating motion pictures using no electricity, moving parts or special lighting.

“The images really do seem to come to life as you walk by them,” Steed said. “Our patrons are amazed!”

The “Edge of Life” exhibition, which also includes artist statements and short writings from forest pathologists explaining each pathogen and its significance within the ecosystem, is designed as a traveling show that will eventually be supplemented with a 100-page, full-color book.

Steed said several school groups have already viewed the show. “It’s interesting to note that some of the groups come primarily to view the art, and others visit with a focus on the scientific aspect. They all leave with an increased knowledge and appreciation of both fields, though.”

Both “Edge of Life” and “LIFETILES” are fun and educational for all ages, Steed continued. “If you’re looking for something different to do during Spring Break, come on down to The Art Center. Admission is free!”

The exhibitions will run through Saturday, March 26. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information about either of the shows, call (936) 468-1131.

SFA’s on-campus Griffith Gallery is currently closed until the opening of “Pen and Pigment” at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 25.

History professor to lead cancer discussion at SFA (March 23)

The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of History and Gender Studies will host a discussion led by Dr. James Olson, professor of history at Sam Houston State University, about his award-winning book, “Bathsheba’s Breast: Women, Cancer, and History” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Room 142 of the Dugas Liberal Arts North Building.

“Cancer awareness has been a critical part of my life mostly because I have had to deal with so much cancer myself,” Olson said. “In addition to being an important element of my personal life, research and writing about cancer has become a focus of my professional life, as well.”

In 1981, Olson was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in his left hand. His hand and forearm were removed by 1987 after the tumor kept returning. In 1990, he had a skin tumor removed from his head and in 2001 was diagnosed with brain cancer. However, doctors were able to remove most of the tumor and followed up with chemotherapy. By 2005, the brain tumor had returned and Olson received more brain surgery and radiation to treat it. In 2010, Olson was diagnosed with prostate cancer and received treatment for it.

The Johns Hopkins University Press nominated Olson’s book for the Pulitzer Prize in history. It won the 2002 History of Science category award from the Association of American Publishers and the Los Angeles Times recognized his book as one of the best non-fiction books in America for 2002.

“In 1981, when I was first diagnosed, I decided to begin reading in the field of cancer and cancer history, and it resulted in the book ‘A History of Cancer: An Annotated Bibliography’,” Olson said.

After his amputation in 1987, Olson began work on “Bathsheba’s Breast,” which was published in 2001.

The book provides a history of breast cancer beginning with Queen Atossa, from Babylon in 490 B.C., to Dr. Jerri Nielson, who was trapped in Antarctica in 1999 with breast cancer.

Staying true to the history, the book ventures back 3,500 years to an Egyptian surgeon who wrote about “bulging tumors” in the breast. The book details numerous lives taken or affected by breast cancer, including Empress Theodora, wife of Justinian; Anne of Austria, mother of Louis XIV of France; child actress Shirley Temple Black; former first lady Nancy Reagan; environmentalist Rachel Carlson; and Linda McCartney, wife of musician Paul McCartney.

The book chronicles advances in breast cancer treatment and diagnosis and the uncertainty that women face about the disease and the choices they make.

“By the time ‘Bathsheba’ actually was released, I had been diagnosed with brain cancer,” he said. “This prompted me to write my most recent work ‘Making Cancer History: Disease and Discovery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’.”

Olson graduated in 1967 from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He received both his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1969 and 1972. He has been involved in writing or editing more than 30 books.

Olson has been married for 44 years and has four children and 17 grandchildren.

The event is free and open to the public.

A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Lower Melrose Cemetery located in Melrose, Texas with Brother Don Chumley officiating.

Obituary: Barbara Sue Nichols

Funeral service for Mrs. Barbara Sue Mutchler Nichols, 68, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at 2:00 pm at Laird Funeral Home with Pastor Homer Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Nichols was born on May 23, 1942, in Cape Giradeau, Missouri to the late James Mutchler and Louise Kruegar.

She passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6, 2011, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Barbara attended school in Scott City, Missouri. She had been a resident of Nacogdoches for 40 years. She enjoyed sewing, garage sales and resale shops. She had been employed at Nacogdoches Medical Center in the Housekeeping Department of which she missed dearly. She loved her family dearly and was a wonderful mother, sister and a beloved grandmother whose grandchildren affectionately called her “Nanny”.

She is survived by her children, Rick Innis and wife, Rana of Nacogdoches, Randy Innis of Nacogdoches, Lisa Innis Milford and husband, Randy of Brookeland, Tracy Cook and wife, Kristi of Garrison, Johnny Cook and wife, Amy of Garrison and Kevin Cook of Nacogdoches; special daughter, Shelbie Smith of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Carla Phelan, Randa Malone, Triston Cook, Dillion Cook, Tanner Cook, Jacob Cook, Anthony Innis, Robyn Cole, Rocky Innis, Erica Innis, Courtney Innis, Johnathan Innis, Justin Colwell and Eric Allen; as well as 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James “Jim” Mutchler of Arkansas and Charles “Kayo” Mutchler of Mississippi. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary Mutchler and a son, Eric Innis.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Innis, Ryan Malone, Rick Innis, Justin Coldwell, Tanner Cook and Triston Cook.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made at Bancorp South Bank in the name of Lisa Millford or Shelbie Smith to assist the family with funeral expenses.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, from 5-7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Precinct 4 Constable: Two arrested, methamphetamine laboratory discovered and over a pound of methamphetamine seized

The Nacogdoches County Constable Office precinct 4 has executed a search warrant late Monday night that has lead to the seizure of a methamphetamine laboratory and over a pound of methamphetamine. The search warrant was conducted in the Melrose south subdivision located on country road 408. Constable Bridges stated that his office obtained a search warrant for the residence of Tommy Ray Smith Jr after the constable office established probable cause for the warrant.

Constable Bridges stated that the investigation started last week after Deputy Constable Marble conducted a traffic stop of Tommy Smith on highway 21e. At that time Marble conducted a search of Smith’s vehicle and found some apparent items that made us believe that Smith was possibly involved in methamphetamine. The constable office conducted surveillance of Smith residence which gave us a lot more information. We found that Smith was cooking methamphetamine in his travel trailer and using anhydrous ammonia as one of the main sources for the ingredients.

On Monday night around 9:30 pm the Constable Office executed the search warrant. While outside the trailer Deputies could smell the odor of chemicals. Constable Bridges advised that forced entry had to be made after the suspect locked the doors and refused to come out of the trailer. Officers found the suspect holding a two liter bottle that contained anhydrous ammonia as well as other chemicals. This bottle was in the process of cooking methamphetamine, which can be very dangerous in these stages.

Constable Bridges advised that over a pound of methamphetamine was recovered from the scene along with numerous chemicals such as muratic acid, sulfuric acid and anhydrous ammonia along with other other components for a methamphetamine laboratory.

Due to the dangerous chemical, anhydrous ammonia which was found on scene the constable office called in DLS hazmat response unit to assist with the scene. Deputies along with hazmat personal had to use respirators and air monitors to safely process the scene.

Tommy Ray Smith Jr, 27 years of age from Melrose, Texas and Amanda Atkins, 34 years of age from Melrose were arrested for possession of certain chemicals with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, 2nd felony. Both subjects were booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail.

March 8: SFA Crime Log

On 3-08-2011 an Officer was dispatched to University Woods in reference to a Disturbance. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant who advised on 3-8-2011 a known person broke a window and damaged a door at her residence. There is one suspect.

On 3-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 3-7-2011 his unattended cell phone was stolen at the Student Recreation Center. There are no suspects.

Additional information:

Aggravated Assault; 4100 North- Disturbance between two females. One produced two knives and stabbed the other in the elbow. The victim was able to take the knives away from the aggressor and in the process the aggressor received a minor cut on the face. No life threatening injuries.

Fellow Nacogdoches County Democrats,

It’s March already and things are moving quickly in this “off” election year. We encourage each of you to attend our monthly meeting on March 10th at the County Courthouse Annex, beginning at 5:30. We have been slowly moving to prepare for the 2012 election season and Angelina County Chairman Jim Wark will be our guest speaker. Mr. Wark will give us an overview of what Democrats in the Lufkin-area have been doing to prepare for 2012. We will also have pizza, so come hungry! Also be sure to mark down March 17th and join fellow Nac County Dems for our March luncheon at Delacroix. We had a great time in February as more than 20 people dined and chatted the afternoon away!

A thorough monthly news summary is below, but we’ve been cruelly reminded about the effects of not putting Democrats in office, particularly at the state level. Our Republican state legislature and Governor Perry are struggling to come up with a budget that addresses a $27 billion shortfall over the next biennium, while focusing on “emergency issues” like voter ID, so-called “sanctuary cities”, and forcing women who make the difficult choice to get an abortion to view and/or be told of sonogram results against their will. This state deficit is the result of two things: One is lower rate of sales tax revenue over the last three years due to the recession (that we are slowly climbing out of thanks to President Obama and Congressional Democrats-see below). The second reason is due to the shortsighted policies of the Texas Republican leadership, who have controlled every statewide office since 1994, as well as the legislature for more than ten years. When you see the impact of state budget cuts on our local school districts, Stephen F. Austin University, our county government, as well as on local health and human service agencies, be sure to remind your friends and families why is it important to vote Democratic. As we’ve displayed over the last century, Democrats like yourself have been the biggest advocates for a strong public education system, a health care system that provides quality care that is both affordable and accessible, and other governmental policies that benefit the middle and working class citizens of our nation, state, and county, as opposed to the wealthiest in our community. Let’s keep fighting the good fight and promoting Democratic candidates for state and local office.
