Celebrate Earth Day by visiting the Farmer’s Market (April 16)
The Farmer’s Market is a great place to add to your Saturday morning schedule. Don’t forget to stop by the Pineywoods Native Plant Center for the annual SFA Plant Sale and Earth Day and celebrations.
Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies & pies), organic beef, candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas and relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, free-range eggs, locally raised organic tilapia fish and tilapia fillets, flowers, fudge, herbs (basil, cilantro, coriander, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, loofah sponges, plants (house plants, starter plants, trees & whips), lye soap, tamales and vinegars. LOCAL PRODUCE: asparagus, frozen beans (butter, green, baby Lima & pinto), BEETS (2 TYPES), frozen blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, CAULIFLOWER, frozen corn (field & sweet), cucumbers, greens (collard, mustard, spinach & turnip), kohlrabi, lettuce (red tip & Romaine), onions (green, red, white and yellow), frozen peaches, frozen peas (black eye, zipper cream, brown Crowder & purple hull), banana peppers, new potatoes, radishes (regular & WATERMELON), RUTABAGAS, squash (yellow & zucchini), strawberries, tomatoes (green, Romas, red Celebrity slicers & red Jet Star slicers) and large purple top turnips.

The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. The market is open on Saturday mornings. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.
Please note that the Farmer’s Market is a “Smoke Free” facility for the health of our customers and vendors.

SFA orchestra concert features Schmidbauer winner (April 16)
Pianist Sun-A Park, winner of the 2010 George and Peggy Schmidbauer International Competition, will be the featured soloist during the Stephen F. Austin State University Orchestra of the Pines’ “Fantastic Showstoppers” concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Cole Concert Hall.
Park’s performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” with the orchestra is a part of the grand prize for the Schmidbauer competition, which the SFA School of Music hosts each year.
Sun-A Park, winner of the 2010 Schmidbauer International Competition, will be the featured pianist soloist during the SFA Orchestra of the Pines concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16.
“Sun-A Park won the competition with critical acclaim,” said Gene H. Moon, director of orchestral studies at SFA. “We are certain she will impress us again with Rachmaninoff’s piece, a supernova of sound and technique.”
Joining the Orchestra of the Pines for Cèsar Franck’s “Symphony in D minor” will be select string students from Pasadena Memorial High School. The students’ orchestral director, Stanley Oakes, serves on the faculty of the SFA strings camp each summer. He and Moon have collaborated on numerous projects in the past.
“Working with students from Mr. Oakes’ program is an ongoing effort to continue bridging the gap between the college and high school orchestra programs to help enable and prepare students who may wish to follow a career in music,” Moon said.
Each high school student will be paired with an orchestral college student who will serve as a mentor during rehearsals and the concert.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.

April 13: SFA Crime Log
On 4-13-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Griffith Hall in reference to Assault. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 4-13-2011 she was pushed by an unknown subject at Griffith Hall. There are no suspects.
On 4-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Harassment. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 4-12-2011 she received numerous unwanted phone calls from a known person. There is one suspect.
On 4-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Identity Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised that an unknown person used his personal information to file a fraudulent tax return. There are no suspects.
On 4-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 4-7-2011 and 4-11-2011 her secure bicycle was stolen from the bicycle rack at Lumberjack Village. There are no suspects.

Wright (Democratic): April Calendar
Fellow Nacogdoches County Democrats,
Happy April! We encourage each of you to attend this Thursday’s meeting at the County Courthouse Annex. Each of the three candidates running for the office of Nacogdoches Mayor (Pam Fitch, Roger Van Horn, and Walter McCrimmon) will be there to speak and take questions from the group. We’d like a good turnout, so invite all of the Democrats that you know and let’s pack the place. Additionally, an NISD School Board Forum will be held on April 28th at Liberty Hall from 6-8 PM. This forum will feature candidates for each of the three contested seats and the entire community is invited.
Also, join us this Saturday for an Earth Day celebration themed “Growing Seeds of Sustainability” from10-2 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center on Raguet St. Music, speakers, food, exhibitors, and kid’s activities will all be available. We will be hosting a table. If you’re interested in helping us cover an hour shift, email me.
Finally, join us at Szechuan (3308 North St.)for our monthly luncheon on April 21. We always have a great time and of course, enjoy some good food and conversation, Call Elaine Sanders at 560-6436 to RSVP.

Box 633961, Nacogdoches, TX 75963), or consider running for office for next year (the major races we are focusing on are State Rep, Dist, 9 and County Commissioner, Pct. 1 and Pct. 3). We’ve seen the damage done to our state by Republicans over the last several years and need to continue working to turn Texas Democratic Blue!

TDW recently conducted a Voter Registration drive at Arbor Apartments and Spring Hill apartments and began collecting $10.00 from each member to give to Habitat for Humanity. We are also planning a day to help work or donate food to Habitat. We will be collecting plastic eggs to give to the Nacogdoches Easter Egg Hunt and Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan will be the contact person. Her phone number is 569-7139 and her address is at 3106 Center Road. TDW continues to work hard to be contribute to the community and to assist the County Democratic Party in electing Democrats to office in 2012!

The SFA Dems will be participating in Denim Day. (This day is a protest of a 1999 Italian High Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. Enraged by the verdict, women of the Italian Legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans to work). Our chapter will be selling shirts on campus but we wanted to get the word out to the county party as well. Both shirts say Denim Day, April 28th, 2011 on the front and on the back, the guys shirt says, “Ask Listen & Respect your women or she will spit on your sandwich” and the girls says, “Ask Listen & Respect me or I will spit on your sandwich.” We are selling them for $15 and all of the proceeds will go directly to the local women’s shelter.
