‘Jacks’ Relay Team Advances to NCAA Outdoor Championships

    Despite the overwhelming youth on the Stephen F. Austin men’s 1,600-meter relay team, it was talented enough to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. The team, which consists of three freshmen and a senior, clocked a time of 3:08.76 to qualify.

    Senior Donavon Sammons and freshmen Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder and Cass Brown posted the qualify mark that bested team’s from the Pac 10, Big 12 and Mountain West Conferences. Hawkins opened the race, and the ‘Jacks closed out the event with Brown running the anchor leg.

    Junior Nick McCloud advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal heat in the men’s 110-meter hurdles but came up just short in advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. McCloud posted a time of 13.93 to finish 15th overall.

    Freshman Jamal Peden closed out his rookie season Saturday afternoon in the triple jump. Peden recorded a mark of 49-9.00 to finish 26th overall. The ‘Jacks 400-meter relay team just missed a qualifying time, clocking a 41.25 to finish 17th overall. Freshman Clint Harris finished 35th overall in the men’s discus throw. He recorded a mark of 160-4.

    The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place Wednesday, June 8th through Saturday, June 11th, in Des Moines, Iowa.

June 6: SFA Crime Log

     On 6-06-2011 an Officer was observed a damaged glass door on the Schlief Pavilion Tennis Courts. There are no suspects.

     On 6-4-2011 an Officer observed four suspicious subjects at the Student Recreation Center. The Officer made contact with the subjects and discovered three of the subjects had been banned from SFA’s campus. One of the subjects also gave the Officer a fictitious name. Two of the subjects were arrested for criminal trespass and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail without incident. The other two subjects were juveniles and released to the guardians. One of the juveniles received a summons to District Court for criminal trespass. There are three suspects.

     On 6-4-2011 an Officer observed a suspicious vehicle in lot 53. The Officer made contact with the driver and passenger of the vehicle. Upon further investigation, the Officer discovered the subjects to be in possession of a controlled substance. Both subjects were arrested and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail without incident. There are two suspects.

4. CONSENT AGENDA: Items included under the Consent Agenda require little or no deliberation by the Council. Approval of the Consent Agenda authorizes the City Manager or his designee to proceed with conclusion of each in accordance with staff recommendations as reflected in the minutes of this meeting.

A. Consider approval of minutes from the regular session of May 17, 2011. (City Secretary)

B. Consider sponsorship of Scare on the Square 2011. (Main Street Manager)

C. Consider service contract agreement for the City of Nacogdoches to work with SFA in providing assistance in removing and disposing of garbage from the campus during times when the University’s garbage truck is down for repairs or out of service for an extended period of time.
