The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning and on Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

Nacogdoches Police continue their investigation into a shooting incident on South Ritchie Street Thursday afternoon.
The investigation has indicated that two men went to the Ritchie Street residence and purchased a quantity of marijuana. The two men returned to the residence a short time later, and claimed a discrepancy in the amount of marijuana. Once inside the residence, one of the men produced a .22 caliber pistol and threatened the resident,tied him up and the men then began to ransack the house, gathering valuables in a robbery.
The resident of the home, Davarick Chatman, age 32, was able to free himself and retrieve a 16ga shotgun. Chatman then shot one of the men, identified as Michael Obrien Johnson, age 27 of Lufkin. Johnson was shot several times at close range. Johnson died at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.
The other man, identified as Courtny Randale Allen, age 24 also of Lufkin, fled the scene on foot. He turned himself in to the Nacogdoches Police Department last night on a warrant for Aggravated Robbery.
Officers recovered over five ounces of suspected marijuana from the scene. Chatman was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana. Officers recovered both the shotgun and the pistol at the scene.
“The evidence indicates that the incident was a drug transaction that turned into an armed robbery, that resulted in the shooting death of one of the individuals involved”, said NPD Sgt. Greg Sowell. “The shooting case will be presented to the Grand Jury for review”, he added.

The Nacogdoches Police Department is currently investigating a shooting incident that has left one man dead.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 PM this afternoon in the 400 Block of South Ritchie.
Preliminary investigation indicates a possible home invasion, where the resident shot one of the actors.
Officers are looking for another man that may have accompanied the deceased to residence. He reportedly fled the scene on foot.
Officers are still investigating the incident and information will be forthcoming as it is developed.
Information on the victim is being withheld at this time pending notification of the next of kin.

The Music Preparatory Division of Stephen F. Austin State University has set dates for new student registration and auditions for two choirs and the Piney Woods Youth Orchestra.

New students interested in enrolling in private or group music lessons through the Music Preparatory Division of Stephen F. Austin State University and those who want to audition for the Children’s Chorus or Junior Chorale can do so on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Music Prep House, 3028 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.
“We invite new students and parents to come to the Prep House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in order to meet the faculty and learn more about our offerings,” said Pat Barnett, division director. “We offer private lessons for voice, piano, Suzuki violin/viola/cello, traditional violin/viola/cello and bass, classical guitar, harp, flute, percussion and other instruments as requested.”
Auditions for second through fifth graders who would like to join the Children’s Chorus and sixth through eighth graders interested in being a part of the Junior Chorale will also be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students should come prepared to sing a simple song for choir director Nicole Stewart.
The Children’s Chorus is a community choir created to supplement the choral education and performance opportunities available to young people in East Texas, Barnett explained. The group focuses on intonation, breathing, proper vocal production and diction skills and performs a wide variety of repertoire. The chorus will meet from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. each Monday, beginning Aug. 22. Cost is $120 per semester.
Members of the Junior Chorale will sing choral music in multiple parts and foreign languages and study intermediate level theory, sight-singing and ear training. The ensemble will meet from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday, beginning Aug. 23. Cost is $130 per semester.
A workshop for both choirs will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Music Prep House. Both groups will perform fall and spring concerts and at other events throughout the year.
Auditions for the Piney Woods Youth Orchestra, directed by Drs. Evgeni Raychev and Jennifer Dalmas, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in the Music Prep House.
“The orchestra provides an opportunity for our talented student musicians to gain orchestral experience,” said Barnett. “At present, the group is composed mainly of string players, but wind instrumentalists are encouraged to audition.”
The orchestra will rehearse in Room 170 of the Wright Music Building from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, beginning Aug. 29. An end-of-the-semester concert will be held at the end of each semester.
Cost is $75 for students enrolled in private lessons through the Music Preparatory Division and $150 for others.

Hubert Thomas “Tommy” Treadwell III, age 58, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, in Houston, Texas.

Tommy was born March 2, 1953, in Jacksonville, Texas, to Hubert Thomas Treadwell II and Joan Lake Treadwell. Tommy lived in Jacksonville until he was 19 when he married his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Pamela Hall.
He was a graduate of Jacksonville High School, where he excelled in football and was captain of the team. Tommy had a lifelong love of the sport and was always an avid fan—whether it be the NFL, college or high school level.
Tommy attended Baylor Medical School in Houston, becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). He worked a number of years at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital however has been a member of the team at Nacogdoches Surgery Center since it opened.
Tommy was a selfless person, always putting everyone’s wants, needs, and desires ahead of himself. It was his love of helping people and wanting to save lives that led him to a career in health care.
He never met a stranger and possessed the kindest spirit possible. Tommy was always the “life of the party.”
Tommy was the ultimate father and role model for his family and his two sons. Although Tommy only had two biological sons, he was always “just like a father” to his sons’ friends.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Treadwell of Nacogdoches; his sons, Dustin Treadwell of Tyler and Jake Treadwell of Nacogdoches; his mother, Joan Treadwell of Jacksonville; a sister, Robin McCown of Jacksonville; a brother Tony Treadwell of Jacksonville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Hubert T. “Bubba” Treadwell II; a brother, Tim Treadwell; and a nephew, Timothy Treadwell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, 5400 North St., Nacogdoches, with Bro. John Wahl officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 5127 North St.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Randy McCown, Josh McCown, Luke McCown, Corey Treadwell, Tony Treadwell, and Caleb Bolton.
The family suggests that memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Services are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, 5400 North St., Nacogdoches.

Long-time academic dean Dr. James O. Standley, who recently retired after more than three decades of service to Stephen F. Austin State University, will offer the commencement address during summer graduation ceremonies Saturday, Aug. 13.
Standley most recently served as dean of graduate studies and coordinator of the Office of Institutional Accreditation at SFA. He joined the SFA faculty in 1979, serving as founding dean of the College of Applied Arts and Sciences. When it merged with the College of Liberal Arts in 2006, he became the first dean of the College of Liberal and Applied Arts. Before returning to teaching in 2007, Standley was the longest serving dean at any public university in the state.
Standley earned his Bachelor of Science in sociology and psychology from SFA in 1965 and received his Master of Art in criminology from SamHoustonStateUniversity in 1968. He then earned his doctoral degree in sociology from TexasA&MUniversity in 1973 and is a 1985 graduate of the Harvard University Management and Leadership in Higher Education Institute. In 1995, he was honored as TexasA&MUniversity’s Outstanding Sociology graduate.
During his tenure at SFA, Standley has served as dean or interim dean of four colleges, including the College of Applied Arts and Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, and the College of Fine Arts. His retirement from SFA was effective July 31.
SFA commencement ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum. More than 500 degrees will be awarded, including 355 bachelor’s degrees, 140 master’s degrees and seven doctoral degrees. More than 30 students will graduate with honors, including 19 cum laude, four magna cum laude and nine summa cum laude.
