The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents approved additional grant awards totaling more than $3.7 million allocable to fiscal years 2011 and 2012 at its quarterly meeting Tuesday.
Grant awards result from extensive faculty research and service engagement across many academic disciplines and include direct federal, federal pass through, state and private awards. To date, the university has received more than $19 million in grant funding for fiscal year 2011 and more than $13 million for fiscal year 2012.
The Board of Regents also established a fund for the College of Liberal and Applied Arts with an anonymous gift of $70,000. The fund will be used to support academic programs throughout the college, in accordance with the donor’s wishes. A second fund was established with a $15,150 bequest from the late Norman H. Kiess, who served as an associate professor of physics in the 1960s. That fund will be used for faculty support in the physics department.
A one-time merit payment of $500 to qualifying full-time SFA employees was approved by the board upon a recommendation by SFA president Baker Pattillo. The president said the payments are intended to show appreciation for the faculty and staff and will be distributed in mid-December.
The Board of Regents also approved the following items at the meeting Tuesday:
Vocal and piano faculty of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present “The Complete Songs of Henri Duparc” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in Cole Concert Hall as part of the Cole Performing Arts Series.
Performers include sopranos Debbie Berry and Charlotte Davis, mezzo-sopranos Deborah Dalton and Nita Hudson, tenors Ric Berry and Bruce Fowler, baritones David Howard and Scott LaGraff, and pianist Ron Petti.
Petti will play the piano for each of Duparc’s 17 French art songs, and each vocalist will sing either one, two or three selections as either a soloist or as part of a duet.
“While this collection constitutes nearly all of Duparc’s compositional output, the songs are miniature masterpieces,” said Petti. “Teeming with beautiful melody, lush harmonies within the piano accompaniment, and dramatic poetry, they can hold their own against songs of the greatest master composers, including Schubert, Brahms, Schumann, Debussy and Fauré.”
Among the 17 songs, “Chanson triste,” “Phidylé,” “Extase” and “L’invitation au voyage” are probably the most recongnizable, Petti added.
At the beginning of the concert, LaGraff will give a short, informative lecture on the composer and the songs.
During the concert, English translations of the songs’ French text will be projected.
The recital is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive, on the SFA campus.

Funeral services for Dorothy K. Massey Vaughn, 84, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, Ocotber 16, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Alazan Cemetery.
Mrs. Vaughn was born on June 17, 1927 in Alazan, Texas, the daughter of John Warden and Ida “Little Babe” Collins Christopher. She passed away peacefully on October 13, 2011 in Nacogdcohes.
Dorothy was first married to John Massey on March 10, 1945. They had two children, Chris and Johnnie Dale, and he passed away on October 3, 1957. Her second marriage was to Ross Vaughn on December 31, 1959. He passed away on October 6, 2008. Dorothy was an excellent seamstress. She made her daughter’s formals and her son’s Citrus Festival costume. She also knitted sweaters for her grandchildren. Dorothy loved working in her flower beds, playing dominoes, and traveling in an R.V. She was a wonderful cook, and especially enjoyed cooking with a pressure cooker. She was a longtime member of Gravel Ridge Baptist Church and Westside Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. Dorothy was a beautiful woman and was often complimented on her sweet smile. She loved having her children and grandchildren over for meals and holidays. Dorothy was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be truly missed by all her loved ones.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Chris Massey of Nacogdoches, Texas; daughter, Johnnie Dale Norris and husband, Dennis, of Nacogdoches, Texas; step-son, Randall Vaughn of Hereford, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Christopher of Buna, Texas; grandchildren, Cam Massey and wife, Jessica, of Houston, Texas, Chaye Massey and wife, Connie, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Denise Norris of Nacogdoches, Texas, Kristie Williams and husband, Brad, of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, D.J. Case of Houston, Texas, Ian Case of Huntsville, Texas, Jessica Williams of Houston, Texas, and Michael Massey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a little great-granddaughter on the way, Maggie Kaye.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, John Massey and Ross Vaughn, and two brothers, Varnel A. Christopher and Marion L. Christopher.
Pallbearers will be Ian Case, D.J. Case, Cam Massey, Chaye Massey, and Brad Williams.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 5 until 7 PM at Laird Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Nacogdoches Medical Hospital: Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, 4920 NE Stallings Dr. Nacogdoches, TX, 75965.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Rock Haven Nursing Home for the love and care shown to Dorothy.
Jason Bridges Pct 4
The Nacogdoches County Constable Office PCT 4 has made an arrest late Wednesday Night after a traffic stop revealed a large quantity of marijuana found inside a vehicle. Constable Jason Bridges stated that the stop occurred on highway 59 around 11:00 pm. Deputy Constable Allen stopped a dodge charger for expired registration. Constable Bridges stated that the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was very nervous and gave Deputy Allen conflicting statements about her trip. Deputy Allen also observed other indications that caused concern that criminal activity may be occurring. Deputy Allen conducted a search of the motor vehicle after obtaining consent to search the motor vehicle. Six pounds of marijuana was located in the trunk of the motor vehicle inside a garbage bag.
The driver of the vehicle, Ciara Gladney 23 years of age was arrested for possession of marijuana a 3rd felony and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail. The marijuana carries a street value of $4,800 dollars.
