Friday October 21, 2011 – Monday October 24, 2011

    On 10-23-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Lumberjack Landing in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer discovered that a subject had carved on a picnic table. There is one suspect.

    On 10-23-2011 an Officer observed a vehicle parked in a handicap space without displaying a handicap placard in Upper lot 20. The Officer made contact with the driver of the vehicle and discovered him to be in possession of marihuana in a drug free zone. The subject was arrested and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail without incident. There is one suspect.

    On 10-22-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Lot 29 in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 10-21-2011 and 10-22-2011 her vehicle’s tire was punctured in lot 29. There is one suspect.

    On 10-21-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 10-21-2011 his unattended wallet was stolen at the Intramural Field. There are no suspects.

Obituary: Kelly McLaughlin

     Kelly Gilkinson McLaughlin, 29, passed away Friday, October 21 surrounded by family and friends. Kelly was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, fighter, and most of all a child of God. Kelly faced her cancer with grace and courage, and her positive attitude was inspiring and comforting to everyone whose life she touched.

     Kelly was born November 10, 1981 in San Antonio, Texas. She was a 2000 graduate of Greenville (TX) High School and a 2004 graduate of Stephen F Austin University. Kelly was a first grade teacher at Brooks Quinn Jones Elementary in Nacogdoches and attended First Baptist Church. She married the love of her life, James McLaughlin six years ago. Kelly will live on in the hearts of her survivors: her husband James and daughter Allie of Nacogdoches, her parents Dean & Lori Gilkinson of Rockwall, TX, sister and brother-in-law Katie & James Chaumont of Dallas,TX, sister Kimberly Gillkinson of Irving, TX, and father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph & Luzviminda McLaughlin of Lewisville, as well as two friends who were like big brothers – Scott Speichert and Robert Brown, both of Nacogdoches.

     Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 PM, Monday, October 24 and funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, October 25 at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, with Rev. Bobby Smith officiating and burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials be made to one of Kelly’s favorite organizations – The Helping House, P O Box 631513, Nacogdoches, TX 75963.

William T. “Pete” Brown

     A Celebration of the life of William T. “Pete” Brown will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the First Methodist Church Chapel. Pete is survived by his wife, Helen (nee Bates), 3 daughters: Elaine Madden (Dennis), Lisa Stover, and Sharon Stover; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Pete was a World War II veteran, a Mason, and a Shriner. Pete celebrated his life through his family, friends and his hobbies including woodworking, golf, and music. Pete was a Texan by nature if not by nurture, and loved living here. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the memorial fund at the First Methodist Church.

Obituary: Mary Lou Molandes

     Mary Lou Molandes, 93 , formerly of Nacogdoches passed away on October 23, 2011 in Wiley Texas, surrounded by her family. She was born in Nacogdoches County on July 26, 1918, to parents Frank Molandes and Matilda Arriola Molandes. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Cason Monk-Metcalf at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Cemetery. Interment will follow at Bonaldo Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.

SFA team wins regional fishing championship

    The Stephen F. Austin State University Bass Team won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Texas Regional Championship Saturday and set a new FLW Outdoors record for the heaviest one-day catch at a college fishing event. The team’s five-bass limit weighed in at 26 pounds, 6 ounces, and the team had a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 62 pounds, 6 ounces.

    For their victory, Andrew Upshaw of Hemphill and Ryan Watkins of Rockport won $50,000 to be split between the university and the university’s bass fishing club, along with a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower outboard wrapped in school colors for the bass club. They also earned their first berth in the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship, which will be held in April 2012. Upshaw and Watkins beat their closest competitor, a Texas A&M team, by more than 9 pounds.

    “This feels great. To be able to represent our school, our families, the fans,” Watkins said. “It’s unbelievable…the story of the day was rocks. We started on rocks and we finished on rocks. Typically in the fall the bass start a feeding frenzy, and rocky areas provide large areas for more fish to feed on. These areas tend to replenish faster, so the bass are constantly coming and going.”

    Both Upshaw and Watkins graduated from SFA in May but qualified for the Texas Regional three times prior to graduating. The team placed second at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in February, second at Toledo Bend in March and third at Lake Texoma in May.

    Rounding out the top five teams and also qualifying for the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship are three teams from Texas A&M University and a team from Louisiana State University. For a complete list of final standings visit CollegeFishing.com.

    At the national championship, the first-place team will win a top award of $25,000 for their school and, for their fishing club, $50,000 and a Ranger 177TR bass boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard motor wrapped in school colors.

    Coverage of the FLW College Texas Regional Championship, presented by Mercury, will be broadcast from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, on Versus to approximately 500 million households worldwide.
