The Stephen F. Austin State University combined choirs and orchestra and Nacogdoches Community Chorus will present George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
Handel’s three-part oratorio, or unstaged opera, about the life of the messiah, was first performed in 1742. One of the most performed and popular choral works, it is appreciated by audiences all over the globe, said Tim King, SFA professor of music and the concert’s director.
In keeping with the Nacogdoches tradition, the combined choirs and orchestra will perform Part 1 of “Messiah,” popularly known as “the Christmas portion” and the famous “Hallelujah Chorus.”
SFA vocal students, who went through a rigorous audition process, will sing the solos, King explained. Sopranos are Spring freshman Elise Baldwin, Spring senior Kelsy Holt, Cleburne senior Haley Nettleton, and junior Page Madison of Carterville, Ill. Altos are Nacogdoches senior Amber Fontenot and Woodville senior Shelby Tillery.
Senior Joseph Dennis and graduate student Joshua Dennis (both of McKinney) and Dallas senior PJ Lopez will sing the tenor solos. Bass soloists are Livingston senior Casey Jones Parrish and Jacksonville junior Stephen Hanna.
Prior to the concert, the SFA Madrigal Singers will be performing in the lobby. At the evening’s conclusion, the audience will be invited to participate in a carol sing-along.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Medical Center.

SFA adjunct faculty member David Raine (left) and Commerce junior Benn May record a scene from the School of Theatre’s first radio play, “The Gift of the Magi,” which will premiere on the university’s radio station, KSAU (FM 90.1), at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, with subsequent broadcasts to be announced. The half-hour program, written by SFA resident playwright and Broadway veteran writer Jack Heifner, is an adaptation of O. Henry’s classic Christmas story of the same title about a struggling young wife and husband who make extraordinary sacrifices to buy one another Christmas gifts. The production was recorded in the School of Theatre’s newly renovated, state-of-the-art sound laboratory and directed by SFA Senior Lecturer Jackie Rosenfeld. SFA students and faculty voiced all of the parts, wrote and performed the original score and provided background caroling. The program will be available as a podcast at www.theatre.sfasu.edu from Friday, Dec. 9, through Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Internationally acclaimed harpist Emily Mitchell, who joined the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music faculty this fall, will present a joint recital with her university and music preparatory students at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Music Recital Hall, Room 160 of the Wright Music Building.
Hannah Arnold, Sarah Hall and Naomi Harris, who have been studying with Mitchell through the School of Music’s Music Preparatory Division, will perform an ensemble with SFA harp students Victoria Oakes, Garland junior; and Martha de Luna Mateo, graduate student from the Dominican Republic. Each of the five students will also present a solo piece. Mitchell will also perform several solos.
Called “a marvelous harpist” by The New York Times, Mitchell has been heard worldwide as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall and before First Lady Rosalynn Carter at The White House and before British Royalty in England and at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Mitchell is also an established name in the television, motion picture and recording studios of New York City. She has worked closely with stars such as Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow and Bette Midler and can be heard playing on 70 film scores. Her most recent recordings are “Impromptu” and “Mozart Variations” on the JMR label.
She is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, and the Royal College of Music in London named her an “Associate,” as an alumna who has made a significant contribution to the music profession.
Admission to the recital is free. The Wright Music Building is located at 2210 Alumni Drive.
