Obituary: Forrest Lee Meador 1938 – 2012
Mr. Forrest Lee Meador, age 73, of Appleby, Texas, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012, at Nacogdoches Medical Center.
Mr. Meador was born July 6, 1938, and was a longtime area resident. He and his family operated a restaurant and store in Appleby many years in addition to agriculutural operations. Mr. Meador was also a member of the board of directors of Deep East Texas Electric Co-op Inc.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Meador; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Stacey Meador; grandson, Chase Meador; and a granddaughter, Maci Meador.
Funeral service details are pending and will be announced later.
Interment will be at Bethel Cemetery in Appleby.

Obituary: Otis Max McCormack 1918 – 2012
Mr. Otis Max McCormack, 93, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2012, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Max was born March 21, 1918, in Linn Flat, Texas, to parents Otis J. McCormack and Cecile Weatherly McCormack. He married Fairy Blankenship on January 5, 1942; she preceded him in death in 2004. After serving as a U.S. Army medic in World War II, Max moved to Waco, Texas, with his wife. He worked as a shift foreman for Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Waco until his retirement.
Survivors include a nephew, Max M. McCormack, Sr. and wife Linda; niece Suzy McCormack Cantwell; several great and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins.
For the past several years, Max made his home at The Arbor Assisted Living Facility where he considered many of the residents and staff as “second family.” He loved, too, the men from Calvary Baptist Church visiting team.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012, from 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
A graveside service will follow at 2:30 pm at Linn Flat Cemetery with Dr. Bill Parsons of First United Methodist Church Nacogdoches where Max was a member will conduct the service.

SFA children’s series to present ‘Junie B. Jones’ musical
Seats are still available for each of the four performances of “Junie B. Jones” that the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts will present in W.M. Turner Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 26, and Friday, Jan. 27, as part of its Children’s Performing Arts Series.
The SFA Children’s Performing Arts Series will present the Theatreworks USA production of “Junie B. Jones” at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on both Thursday, Jan. 26, and Friday, Jan. 27, in W.M. Theatreworks USA’s fast-paced, one-hour musical starring the outspoken, precocious first grader from Barbara Park’s popular series of books will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on both days.
“In previous years, we have always sold out two performances, so this year, we are offering four opportunities for our area elementary students to see the show,” explained Diane J. Flynn, director of the children’s series.
“Kindergartners through fifth graders will enjoy seeing some of their favorite characters come to life as Junie deals with new friends, new glasses, the annual kickball tournament and other angst-ridden situations she writes about in her ‘Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal,’” Flynn continued.
Anticipating a sell-out for all four performances, Flynn encourages parents and teachers to purchase tickets early.

Paul Martinez will be playing this weekend
Singer/songwriter/musician Paul Martinez aka The Texas Rambler will play for us this Saturday. Paul is an inductee of the American Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame and currently lives with his family on his East Texas ranch.
Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies & pies), candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, corn meal, free-range eggs, herbs (basil, coriander, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (house plants, bedding plants, trees & whips), smoothies, soaps (lye and herbal), tamales, vinegars and fruit wines. The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

Texas Bluebird Society to host 2012 season kickoff at SFA
The Texas Bluebird Society will host its 2012 season kickoff and silent auction at from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
The featured speakers are Greg Grant and Cliff Shackelford. Grant, a horticulturist with SFA Gardens, will present two programs including, “I Can’t Stop Loving You: A Lifetime Affair with the Blues” and “Berry Me with Bluebirds: Landscaping for the Songbird of Happiness.”
Shackelford, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Ornithologist, will present “Knock on Wood: The Woodpeckers of East Texas.” Other presentations will prepare new and experienced blue-birders for the upcoming nesting season.
The program is sponsored by SFA Gardens. Silent auction proceeds help support the Texas Bluebird Society.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA Campus. The cost for advance registration is $15 and includes the lectures, a lunch buffet and one door prize ticket. The deadline for advance registration is Saturday, Jan. 21.
