Norman’s Nacogdoches, March 20

This week I want us to consider some of the inherent dangers that face law enforcement personnel day in day out. Most every day, while on duty, and sometimes when they are off duty dangers that we the citizens rarely think about. The news media reported this past week of a double murder involving a Constable and his wife over in Shelby County. Often the best of officers can’t control the evils facing them.
I often watch law enforcement officers and their actions. One officer, a dear friend of mine, looks as calm as a kitten. But buddy he is one of the toughest men I know. He does everything he can to stay out of television and newspaper pictures. Over the years he has handled some of the nastiest crime in Nacogdoches County. By simply wearing jeans and shirts his identity is probably as well hidden as any law man.
In contrast, I know another law man, an elected official on the lowest rung of the ladder. He dresses in camouflage (has anybody told him the Iraq war is over?), A t-shirt to show off his well-toned muscles, a military haircut and his weapon very visible. He seems to always make sure there is a newspaper camera close by.
It’s interesting to watch young officers getting a haircut. It’s always a military style. They are tough customers and go after all the criminals in a jurisdiction, not just the drug dealers. We need, as the saying goes, men with poise, not boys with noise.

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to Feature Horticulturist on Growing Grapes
The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110, at 1924 Wilson Drive. Horticulturist Dr. David Morgan will present “Growing Grapes in East Texas.”
For more than 20 years, Morgan was a horticulture professor at Texas A&M and Texas Tech universities. He taught courses at Tech including floriculture, herbaceous and woody plant materials, and plant propagation, and was the coach of the university’s Floral Arranging and Flower Judging Team. At Texas A&M, he conducted research and taught a graduate-level course in landscape horticulture.
In 1992 Morgan accepted a position as editor of a horticultural trade journal, returning to the editing and writing career he had enjoyed for nine years after graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in agricultural journalism. Among his professional activities, he was secretary-treasurer of the Southern Region of the International Plant Propagators’ Society for 22 years and was honored with its Sidney B. Meadows Award of Merit and named a Fellow of the society. He has authored and co-authored many scientific and popular publications, three book chapters and more than 350 popular articles. At Tarrant County College, he has been an adjunct faculty member in horticulture for nine years, teaching landscape maintenance, principles of horticulture and plant propagation.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. Because of Spring Break, it is being held a week later this month. A rare plant is raffled after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves lecture series fund are appreciated.

Obituary: Linda Darlene Hall
Mrs. Linda Darlene Hall, age 64, of Timpson, Texas, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012.
She was born September 14, 1947, in Abilene, Texas, and had lived in Shelby County, Texas, for a number of years. Mrs. Hall was a homemaker, dedicated to taking care of her family.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth W. Hall Sr. of Timpson, Texas; sons, Jeffery Green and fiance Kathy Anderson of Katy, Texas, and Kenneth Hall Jr. and wife Carmen of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law, Traci Green of Fort Worth, Texas; granddaughters, Katelyn Green and Morgan Green, both of Fort Worth, Texas, Brianna Hall of Houston, Texas, and Laura Anderson of Katy, Texas; and three sisters, Donna Smith of Tipton, Oklahoma, Sheila Samples and husband Royce of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Carol Wright and husband Jay of Granbury, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Green.
Funeral services are set for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches, Texas, with Bro. Bill David Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery, located off County Road 732.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 19, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches, Texas.
