    Members of the Stephen F. Austin State University music faculty will present music by Stefan Cwik, Darius Milhaud, Ferenc Farkas and others during “Coleidoscope” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

    “The recital’s title reflects my colleagues and my wish to honor our invaluable patrons, Ed and Gwen Cole, during this kaleidoscope of chamber music,” said cellist Dr. Evgeni Raychev, the event’s organizer.

    Joining Raychev will be violinist Jennifer Dalmas, flutist Christina Guenther, clarinetist Christopher Ayer, bassoonist Susan Nelson and pianists Geneva Fung and Ron Petti.

    The performance is part of the SFA School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.

    The Caliendo Barcellona Flute Guitar Duo will present a guest artist recital at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the Music Recital Hall as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series.

    “The program will be a thrilling synthesis of composer/guitarist Christopher Caliendo’s world music,” said SFA Associate Professor of Music Christina Guenther. “His compositions encompass a variety of genres, including tango, gypsy, flamenco, jazz, classical, samba and bossa nova.”

    Caliendo is the only composer to have received two commissions from the Vatican. Other career highlights include two Heritage Awards from the Academy of Motion Pictures for his original soundtracks for 20th Century Fox and his composing/orchestrations for “Dallas,” “Knott’s Landing, “Paradise” and “Guns of Paradise.”

    Barcellona is professor of flute and director of woodwind studies at the Cole Conservatory of Music, California State University Long Beach and flutist with the internationally acclaimed Westwood Quintet. He maintains an active performing career and received a Grammy nomination for his solo album, “Is This the Way to Carnegie Hall?”

    The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present an artist lecture by Vincent Falsetta, professor of painting and drawing at the University of North Texas, at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the Art Building, Room 106. Admission is free and open to the public.

    Eight of Falsetta’s paintings are currently on display at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches as part of the “Silent Transmissions” exhibition, which will run through Saturday, March 31.

    On the artist’s website, he writes that his distinctly abstract paintings “tend to suggest waves of sound, water, light or seismic activity.”

    His paintings are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Galleria Cavallino in Venice, Italy; Neiman-Marcus in LasVegas and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City, Utah, to name a few.

    The SFA Steel Band will perform traditional, Caribbean and Latin favorites during its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

    The 12-member ensemble performs with a full set of steel pans (made from 55-gallon oil drums), an electric bass guitar, drum set and a large array of Latin percussion—or as they say in Trinidad, the “Engine Room,” explained Scott Harris, SFA associate professor of percussion and the group’s director.

    The program includes Caribbean favorites “Rant and Rave,” “Brazil” and “Maryanne,” as well as American popular music such as “Black Magic Woman,” Come on, Eileen” and “Fragile.”

    Harris invites everyone to don a Hawaiian shirt and join the group for a memorable evening of fun, excitement and, of course, the traditional Limbo dance — a featured event at every SFA Steel Drum Band performance.

    The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

    Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Science will present the dance program’s spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The concert will showcase works by SFA students, dance program faculty and guest artists.

    Professor Stan Bobo’s work “T’wixt Dusk and Dawn” recently was seen at the American College Dance Festival in Laredo, along with “Sieve,” which was set on the SFA Repertory Dance Company last fall by guest artist Sarah Imhoff-Jones. Another repertory work from the fall, “A Shot in the Dark,” will make its main-stage debut. It was restaged for the company by visiting guest artists from Berlin, Birgitt Bodingbauer and Simone Grindel. Adjunct faculty member Heather Samuelson contributes “Propulsion,” a group work for six dancers that explores geometric shapes and intricate lifts to music by Frédéric Chopin.

    The concert also is an opportunity for students completing their bachelor’s degrees in dance to present their works. This semester, six students have created new dances under the direction of Professor Elizabeth Rhodes. They are Bethany Anguiano, Jessica Chance, Alex Charles, Katie Reeves, Hannah Schultz and Tamara Story. Two additional student choreographers, Katie Husfelt and Mirannda Lindberg, have been invited to restage their works, which debuted in the dance program’s studio concert last fall.
