SFA Art students receive scholarships, awards
At the recent opening of the Stephen F. Austin State University Art Alliance Spring Show, Christopher Talbot, interim director of the SFA School of Art, announced the recipients of the 2012-2013 art scholarships.
The recipients of SFA art scholarships and awards were announced during the opening of the 29th Art Alliance Spring Show. Those present to receive the awards include, back row, from left, Ryan Blackburn, Joseph Alford, Interim Director of the School of Art Chris Talbot, Christina Jimerson, Lauren Macharoni, Emile Gaultier, Max Smith and Heather Wobbe. Center row, from left, Mandy Clay, Jenifer Auvil, Megan Marcantel and Le’Anne Alexander. Front row, from left, Michelle Powers, Emily Yeats, Emily Grogan, Katherine Holmes and Cynthia Brown.
Joseph Alford received the Carolyn and Richard Skurla Graduate Scholarship; Jenifer Auvil and Autumn Lumpkin each received a Piero Fenci Scholarship; Jessica Dunn, the Elsie Arscott Scholarship; Emilie Gaultier, the McKinney Scholarship; and Emily Grogan the Patricia Roberdeau Mast Scholarship.
Katherine Holmes received the Melba Cranford Memorial, the Debbie Simpson/Terry Miller Memorial, and the Stephen Weeks Memorial Scholarship. Christina Jimerson received the Art Alliance, the John and Doris Daniel, and the Lucille Fouts Raborn Scholarship.
Heather Wobbe received the Eloise Chambers Adams Art Scholarship and the Patricia Roberdeau Mast Scholarship. Emily Yeats received the Brian Philip Joseph LaBarbera Memorial and the Barbara Brown Schoenewolf Scholarship.
Michelle Smith, president of the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts, announced the recipients of that organization’s scholarships and grants.
Gabrielle Monk and Pamela Erhardt each received Graduate Student Scholarships, and the following received Friendship Grants: Daniel Baugh, Travis Erxleben, Holly Haynes, Christina Jimerson, Elizabeth Milam, Nicholas Palella, Michelle Powers and Emily Yeats. Also, Joseph Alford, Andrei Bucur, Elizabeth Clark-Paterson, Casey Furche, Jeremiah Kelley, Michael Millichamp, Tiffanny Upshaw and Marie Santiago Velez.
Additionally, Meagan Rice was recognized as the Karl Schlicher Outstanding Art Graduate and Michelle Powers received the Chris and Yvette Sidnell Highest GPA Award.

Find the perfect Mother’s Day Gift this weekend at the Farmer’s Market
The market has a variety of locally produce handmade items that would make for great mother’s day gifts. Also this weekend peaches & plums will be available!
Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, mini cheesecakes, cookies, fried pies & pies), candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheese, freshly ground organic corn meal and whole wheat flour, free-range eggs, herbs (basil, coriander, mints, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (house plants, bedding plants, fruit trees, trees & whips), smoothies, soaps (lye and herbal), ribboncane syrup, tamales, vinegars and fruit wines. LOCAL PRODUCE: asparagus, green beans, frozen shelled beans (butter, baby Lima & pinto), beets, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, greens (arugula, beet, collard, kale, mustard, spinach, Swiss chard & turnip), kohlrabi, lettuce (mixed, red leaf & tasio), okra, frozen okra, onions (green, red, yellow & white), peaches, fresh shelled English peas, frozen shelled peas (black eye, brown Crowder & zipper cream), peas (English, snow & sugar snap), peppers, plums, new potatoes, radishes, squash (8 ball, patti pan, yellow & zucchini), strawberries, sweet potatoes, hydroponic tomatoes, turnips and yams.
Musical entertainment this weekend will be provided by Mary Martha Motley and Guitar Bill from Alaska.

The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. The market is also open on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. throughout the busy growing season. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.
Please note that the Farmer’s Market is a “Smoke Free” facility for the health of our customers and vendors.

EARTHQUAKE REPORTED IN SHELBY COUNTY
An earthquake that measured 3.7 in magnitude shook southern Shelby and northern Nacogdoches County this morning.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake epicenter was located 2 miles WSW of Timpson, Texas. The earthquake was felt in Garrison, Appleby and Martinsville areas of Nacogdoches County.
The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety are currently surveying damage. There have been no confirmed reports of serious damage or injuries in Nacogdoches County.
There are no reports of damage or any activity within the City of Nacogdoches.
“County Judge Joe English has been in contact with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and they will be checking the dam at Lake Naconiche for any structural damage”, said Greg Sowell, Public Information Officer for Emergency Management. “There is no obvious damage there, but the lake is in the area where the quake was felt”.
A limited Emergency Operations Center has been opened in the courthouse to monitor the situation.
A gas leak was reported about the same time on State Highway 7 east, but was not related to the earthquake.
Further information will be announced when it becomes available.
The Nacogdoches County Unified Operations Center continues to operate on a limited scale to address issues related to this morning’s earthquake that was felt in northeastern Nacogdoches County.
County Judge Joe English reported that he has been in contact with Dr. Wesley Brown, a seismologist with Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Brown is acting as an informational resource in this response operation.
The Texas Department of Transportation crews are checking the structural integrity of bridges on state and federal highways in the area. Nacogdoches County Road and Bridge Department staff is checking bridges on county roads.
Officials from Union Pacific Railroad are checking railroad tracks and bridges in the area for safety.
The National Resource Conservation Service is sending officials from Waco to check the dam at Lake Naconiche.
As of this release, no damage or injuries have been reported or located within Nacogdoches County.
