Obituary: E.A. “Jack” Langford
E.A. “Jack” Langford, 90, passed away in Nacogdoches on Friday, August 10, 2012. He was born in Martinsville on October 19, 1921 to parents George Leroy Langford and Buelah Wall Langford. A funeral service is scheduled on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Dock Lazarine officiating. United States Army will perform military rites at Cason Monk Chapel. Interment will follow at Old Salem Cemetery in Shelby County. Jack is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline “Polly” Langford; brother, George Langford; sister, Opal Langford Murdock.
He is survived by his two sons, Gerald Langford, Gary Langford and wife Caye Lyn all of Nacogdoches; daughter, Linda Perkins and husband Jim of Woden; grandchildren, Marqus Langford and wife Shirley of Nacogdoches, Misty Collins and husband Ken of Alto; Belinda Perkins, Tammy Perkins both of Woden; great grand-children Samual, David, Skylar Langford, Lance, Darren, Craig Collins; step great-grandchild, Oscar Jimenez.
E.A. Langford was a World War ll veteran and served in the United States Army where he learned mechanic and cooking skills that followed him all throughout his life. He was self-employed for over 50 years and took care of the community’s cars, trucks, boats, lawn mowers, and tractors. He always offered hard work at a fair price that kept him in business for so long. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church. On his free time he loved providing fish fry’s and iced tea for his family and friends. He had a secret recipe of hush puppies that everyone loved and would not share! He was a strict father and a straight forward man who let you know exactly where he stood on topics. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.
Memorial donations may be offered to an organization that helps veterans and their families in need: Fisher House, Building 3623, George C. Beach Road, Fort Sam Houston, Tx 78234-6200.

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to Feature Greg Grant
The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110, at 1924 Wilson Drive. SFA Gardens horticulturist and writer Greg Grant will present “Gardening for Love – An Arcadian Dogtrot.”
Grant will share the story of his lifelong quest to restore his grandparents’ old farmhouse and how he landscaped it with pass-a-long plants from friends and ancestors along with his own ornamental introductions. The house and garden were featured in the July issues of Southern Living and Neil Sperry’s Gardens magazines.
Grant was born in Tyler, raised in Longview, and has called Shelby County home for more than a decade. He earned degrees in floriculture and horticulture from Texas A&M University and previously worked for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Louisiana State University, Lone Star Growers, the San Antonio Botanic Garden, and Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
He writes regularly for Texas Gardener and Neil Sperry’s Gardens magazines and recently published “Texas Fruit and Vegetable Gardening” and “Heirloom Gardening in the South,” which received a 2012 Silver Merit Award from the Garden Writers Association. He also writes a monthly blog at arborgate.com.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves lecture series endowed fund are always appreciated.
