Chris Herrington, Contributing Writer
It is no real secret that advertising and the lurking culture of live data is so fully embedded into our lives that we are quickly becoming a facsimile of “The Truman Show”
in real life, all of us. And nowhere is this more persistent than in the field of gender identity and demographic analysis by the grooming media specialists. Every chain has a marketing savvy wisdom junkie insider who has as his or her sole mining job the lobbying of the human mind that is the target of whatever campaign is being run to sell whatever widget.
We can know that regardless of our demeanor, mindset, desires, capacity, or needs, someone somewhere wants everything we have, all of our resources, and all of our labor capacity and if they can get it for free without getting caught or indicted, they will try to do it. One of the most diabolical scenes that has been set into motion is the fashion industry’s need for turnover and the lust for the body du jour of the moment. We have seen some really odd things come down the pike for sure, but nothing beats the raw power of the image of perfection that has been foisted onto the feminine psyche.
I seriously do not think I could manage to survive the crushing weight of junior high as a female. If the tweens do not set their foot on the path of acceptability by the end of 8th grade, their lives are for the most part a pre-written script and the only thing that might save them is the beauty industry, inclusive of the diet and health industries. Skinny is in and it is not healthy. Fat is way out and it is not healthy either. Diabetes is rampant. And bulimia and anorexia are common. Starvation is an up and coming trend now for the in crowd to fit into their skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans and stove pipe stretch pants, and the look of death and devoid of life and the unliving and unlovable face are admired like burnt toast and needed at every moment to show an utter anti-hero distain for all things modern, family, corporate, and sensitive. If IDK was an excuse for the last generation then it is destination central for many young people today who have only eyes and ears for the latest gadgets and consumer technology. They, the devoid of historic context, could not be emo bothered with it all.
Now, this is not true of all youth. Some girls are working beyond the fashion sense. A new group of girls, many lesbian, have skipped right through the entire trap of needing continue to look 12 for the rest of their lives. The curvy girl is also making a comeback with a more realistic looking full figured gal on the horizon. Not fat, but fit enough to enjoy her days and nights. And sexual freedom has been a boon for women who are less likely to get tied down to a marriageless parenting if they can manage to convince men to use condoms. The relentless offering and many fast track ways men have discovered to encourage women to have sex with them has risen to the level where the vast majority of women I talk to reveal to me the demanding one-liner sexual onslaught is nearly inescapable.
Where women are now truly excelling is in the marketing of healthy eating and fitness training. They have finally figured out that health is not a reward for later but a necessity for right now. What men had done was to create war hero status for high school athletes with Bob and his winning catch on game day 35 years ago. What women have done is to raise the bar and created an industry built around lifelong health and fitness to be on the job, in the home, in the bed, and on the town. Women are not the new men, they are Woman 2.0 and they are going to teach the other younger girls that when someone says, “You hit like a girl,” it means you kick cancer’s ass, you raise a family, you go to work, and you have the self-worth to pick a life partner who can keep up with a woman who can run 5 miles, do cardio, and still look good at the end of the day. It is no wonder that men feel threatened. Look at what a woman who is finally taking care of herself for a change looks like! Devastating and capable, tough, strong and unwilling to compromise. Oops. And there you have it. Watch out for the PowerPrincesses of the world. They do not want to buy your crap or take your crap. And now you know why they kissed a girl and they liked it.

The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host “A Walk in the Woods” from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 22 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center at 2900 Raguet St. Research associate Greg Grant will discuss several good woody plant identification books and then lead participants through the plant center grounds explaining how to identify both common and uncommon East Texas trees, like the hardwoods and evergreen trees pictured in this East Texas landscape. Greg is author of the Kindle book “In Greg’s Garden - A Pineywoods Perspective on Gardening, Nature and Family” and has worked with the Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Garden and the San Antonio Botanical Garden. He manages the Rebel Eloy Emanis Pine Savanna and Bird Sanctuary, his own private woodland retreat. Cost is $15 for Friends of SFA Gardens members and $20 for non-members. To register, contact Elyce Rodewald at (936) 468-1832 or erodewald@sfasu.edu.
Dr. Dean Coble, professor of forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, is the first recipient of a recently endowed professorship that rewards faculty members who are excellent teachers and also serve as mentors for students.

Pictured, from right, are Dr. Baker Pattillo, SFA president; Jill Still, vice president for university advancement; Dr. Jim Towns, professor of communication studies; Dr. Dean Coble, professor of forest biometrics and the first recipient of the Jim Towns Mentoring Professorship; Coble’s wife, Dr. Theresa Coble, associate professor of forest recreation and interpretation; and Dr. Richard Berry, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Coble joined the faculty of SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture in 2000 and teaches classes in forestry biometrics, timber management and applied regression in natural resources. He said he was “proud, honored, shocked and humbled” to be chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Towns professorship.
“I have a personal approach to mentoring in that I focus on individual relationships with students to help them develop professionally,” he said.
“I focus on personal relationships that differ from individual to individual but have the common goal of helping the student reach for more than he or she believed possible. I am motivated by great examples in my life, former professors and colleagues as well as family and friends, because I know without their mentorship, I would not be who I am today.”
The funding for the professorship was largely raised by Towns with the help of many of his colleagues and former students. Faculty mentoring and reverse mentoring are among Towns’ research interests, and he has successfully mentored countless students throughout his distinguished 46-year career at SFA.
“I really wanted to endow a professorship that would encourage mentoring relationships, which I think have benefitted me as much as my students over the years,” Towns said.
“Students are drawn to Dr. Coble and desire to emulate him both professionally and personally. He provides an excellent example of how mentoring relationships between students and faculty members can benefit both parties tremendously. He is most deserving of this recognition.”
An analysis of popular recording techniques will be presented at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus as a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Sound engineer, composer and Oxford researcher Duncan Williams will present “Commercial Recording and Contemporary Composition,” a free lecture, at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
Williams will demonstrate various techniques, such as spatialisation and timbral manipulation by signal processing, and will provide a look “under the bonnet” of the pieces, giving the audience an opportunity to critically engage and debate the composition, Kelleher said.
The title for the free lecture, which is part of the 2012-2013 Cole Performing Arts Series, was selected because it encapsulates an online course Williams and Kelleher created for SFA’s SRT program – MUT 360 Commercial Recording and Contemporary Composition – which is offered during the spring semester.
In addition to the SRT students who will benefit from the lecture, music composition students will also learn from Williams’ presentation, Kelleher said.
“Students majoring in composition will find a view of contemporary composition relevant to their interests,” Kelleher said. “Anyone with an interest in music, technology and the recording process will greatly benefit from this lecture because of Williams’ musical background and international perspective.”
In 2011, Williams was the recipient of the University of Oxford’s Humanities Division Teaching Award for supporting innovation in teaching, allowing him to devise a new course in experimental composition using Max/MSP for postgraduate composition students. His research interests are in classical recording, perceptual evaluation of microphone techniques and experimental and electronic composition. He’s had a number of commercial compositions published with EMI Production Music, De Wolfe and West One and a back catalogue with Warner-Chappel.
The Wright Music Building is located at 2210 Alumni Drive.
