Mr. Charles Ray “Charlie” Warren, 85, of Douglass Texas passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2012 in Nacogdoches. He was born on May 16, 1927 in Douglass, Texas to parents Robert Coleman Warren and Lillian Mayfield Warren.
A funeral service will be conducted at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Pastor Randy Arnold of Douglass First Baptist Church officiating on Sunday, September 23, at 2:30 pm. Interment will follow at Eden Cemetery in the Nacogdoches County.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 4-6 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf on Saturday, September 22, 2012.
Memorial donations may be offered to Douglass First Baptist Church, 15122 W HWY 21, Douglass, Texas 75943 .

Despite predictions of lower enrollment as a result of stricter admission requirements this fall, Stephen F. Austin State University has recorded its highest enrollment in history. Enrollment for the fall semester is 12,999, up .7 percent from 12,903 in fall 2011.
Although the number of freshmen at SFA is down 5 percent, from 3,747 to 3,558, the number of graduate students increased 10.8 percent, from 1,535 to 1,701. Additionally, increases in the number of students were recorded for other classifications: sophomore numbers increased from 2,273 to 2,293; juniors grew from 2,395 to 2,475; and seniors rose from 2,953 to 2,972.
“We appreciate the diligent work of faculty and staff members across campus who have assisted in university recruiting efforts and contributed to the educational environment at SFA that leads to student learning,” said Dr. Baker Pattillo, SFA president.
“The fact that our overall enrollment increased during a year in which we increased admission requirements confirms our belief that we should continue to emphasize faculty involvement with our students, small class sizes and a variety of campus-involvement opportunities for our students.”
The number of students transferring from other colleges and universities increased 10.5 percent, from 920 last fall to 1,017 this year.
“This is particularly good news for SFA,” said Dr. Richard Berry, SFA provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Students who transfer to a university from another higher education institution tend to have been successful at their prior institutions and are likely to have adjusted to the academic rigors of college-level coursework. Statistically it is more likely that these students will persist to graduation.”
Hispanic enrollment at SFA is up 16.9 percent, from 1,323 to 1,547. SFA representatives said this increase reflects the university’s efforts to meet the goals of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Closing the Gaps initiatives. The education plan was adopted in 2000 with the goal of closing the gaps in student participation and success, increasing the number of nationally recognized programs or services at universities in Texas, and increasing the level of federal science and engineering research in Texas.
The enrollment figures at SFA showed promise of historic highs throughout the first two weeks of classes.
“Over the course of the first couple of weeks of school, enrollment will vary due to students adding and dropping courses,” Pattillo said. “At one point last week, enrollment was as high as 13,007. It just so happened that on the official census day, with drops and adds, we landed on 12,999.”
SFA has achieved record high enrollments in three of the past four years. Enrollment in fall 2009 was 12,845, and fall 2010 enrollment was 12,954. The university is discussing plans for another increase in academic standards for admission to be implemented in 2015.

Described as a downtown jewel, treasured landmark, first class establishment, gathering spot and community supporter, the Hotel Fredonia is now known as the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Large Business of the Year. The award is one of three Gary Justice Business Excellence Awards given annually by the chamber and is sponsored by R & K Distributors, Inc.

The business began in 1955 with the building of Jack McKinney’s vision of a downtown hub of commerce for Nacogdoches visitors and local residents. Throughout the following years, with periods of great success and failure – to the point of the complete closing of the facility for 26 months beginning in Feb. 1985 – generations of community business leaders have worked, invested and probably spent many hours in prayer so that the hotel would continue in operation and service.
“A number of citizens knew the hotel was part of the life blood of Nacogdoches and an integral part of the community,” said Joe Max Green, a member of the executive committee that reopened and revitalized the business in the late ‘80s. “Good things that happen in our city happen around the hotel.” Others that served on that committee were A.T. Mast, Jr., Ed Cole and Jim Kingham.
The publication “Hotel Fredonia: For the Convenience of Travelers and Guests” written by Dr. Archie P. McDonald, gives detailed descriptions of the hotel’s ups and downs, and the people who contributed their talents and resources. The book includes images of the facility in its numerous stages of development and interesting memorabilia such as the early restaurant menu and room rates.
Reents announced that copies of McDonald’s Hotel Fredonia book will be distributed as a gift to all attending the chamber banquet on Sept. 25. “I’ve been in hundreds, if not thousands, of hotels all over the U.S. and the Hotel Fredonia is a truly unique treasure for Nacogdoches,” Bill King, president/CEO of Nacogdoches Economic Development Corp., said. “Over the past 30 to 40 years, hotels have become much more generic with the same exterior facade, same lobby, same restaurant, same rooms. The Hotel Fredonia is unique, a grand hotel right here in Nacogdoches. People who stay there remember the hotel, and they remember Nacogdoches.
“The economic impact of the hotel is equally important, from the jobs it creates for local citizens, the ‘bed’ taxes it pays, the conferences it brings to town, as well as the sense if community it instills in all of us whenever we walk through its doors.”
The hotel and convention center offers overnight guests and local residents enjoyable experiences with weekly live music entertainment on the patio, monthly fine dining and wine tasting gatherings, and special events such as fight nights and comedy club performances.
“The Hotel Fredonia is Nacogdoches’ living room,” Melissa Sanford, executive director of Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau, said. “We value the hotel as advocates in the promotion of goodwill and tourism in our community. The partnership and contributions that they put forth are essential to the success of Nacogdoches.”
King adds that the hotel “sets us apart from other communities, and we are truly blessed to have it and to be able to enjoy it.”
