SFA Gardens’ Reeves Lecture Series to feature ‘Central Texas Gardener’ producer
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Linda Lehmusvirta, longtime producer of the “Central Texas Gardener” PBS show in Austin, will present “Bulbs for Psycho Lighting Gardeners” at the upcoming Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture hosted by the SFA Gardens.
The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located on Wilson Drive on the SFA campus.
Lehmusvirta is producer, writer and editor of KLRU-TV’s “Central Texas Gardener.” The weekly show’s goal is to spare new gardeners mistakes and help them achieve beautiful, water-wise, organic and wildlife-friendly gardens. “Central Texas Gardener” is broadcast throughout the country and watched online by viewers around the world.
Lehmusvirta has earned two writing awards from the Garden Writers of America, and the show has received several Lone Star Emmy awards. Her garden articles have been published in Garden Design, Organic Gardening, Neil Sperry’s Gardens, Austin Home & Living, Texas Home & Living, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s magazine Wildflower, and the Austin American-Statesman.

According to Lehmusvirta, “Psycho lighting can literally scare a plant to death. And what gardener doesn’t face this frightening situation? It’s the ultimate garden conundrum: shade that gets a searing blast of late afternoon sun or a sunny spot that too quickly fades into ‘blue light.’ Sun lovers grieve and stretch for their beloved. Shade huggers panic and start writing their wills.
“Another challenge for gardeners is unifying a bed that gets sun and shade at different times of the day. How can one create a cohesive look that keeps everybody happy? This talk explores some of the plants that handle lighting challenges and respond with astounding drama!”
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series endowed fund always are appreciated. In RE: P12-19975- Should be an Interference with Child Custody- complainant reported that a non-custodial parent took a two year child without permission of the boy’s mother. Officers located the man and the child short time later, and the child was returned to his mother. Charges are pending review of the court orders. No injuries.

Holiday Open House to kick off the season in downtown Nacogdoches
With less than 50 days till Christmas, and the Nine Flags Christmas Festival just around the corner, downtown Nacogdoches has the holidays on our mind. The City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program and participating downtown merchants are extremely excited about next week’s Holiday Open House, set for Thursday, November 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. “We encourage the community to come out and visit the stores during the Holiday Open House, from 4-7 p.m.,” said City of Nacogdoches Main Street Manager, Sarah O’Brien said. “Come start your holiday shopping and Shop Nac First while enjoying various in-store specials, t-shirts, door prizes, goodie bags, gift wrapping, refreshments, and much more!”
Participating downtown businesses include: A Beautiful You Salon and Spa, Blue Ribbon Gift Shop, Brick Street Antiques, French Knot Quilt Shop, Glass Castles, Heart of Texas, Hotel Fredonia, House of Traditions, Macy May, Antiques on Main, Newbie’s Fitness, Old Town General Store, Oh Happy Day Lingerie, Polka Dotz Boutique, Runaway Mule, and the Wildflower.
“From Macy May’s new product line debut, Champagne and chair massages and a Beautiful You Salon, to cookies with Santa at Oh Happy Day, our downtown businesses have pulled out all the stops this year,” said O’Brien. “Be sure to bring your appetite as well, as various merchants will have appetizers for everyone to enjoy.”
Thanks to Brick Street Antiques and House of Traditions the Nacogdoches Independent School District’s Noble Choir will be downtown to sing Christmas carols for everyone’s enjoyment. This year’s Holiday Open House is sure to put even Scrooge into the holiday spirit.

Herrington: The Game Plan of Fear

In the public and private sectors, these arguments are seen as the battle ground between the nanny state and the corporate elite. Government or big business. But the truth is that the strand of thinking that is used to disempower us at the mid-macro level of national or international levels, begins its true impact at the micro-micro level and maybe even at the nano-level. Why do we need to trust either one? Why can’t we trust each other? There is one simple reason that is the grounding of all fear: We don’t trust ourselves.
Religion tells us that we sin. Our waistlines tell us that we cheat. The courts give us a warning. The agencies and institutions in our lives constantly cajole us to stay within the lines. And even those who are monsters are ready to lawyer up, are armed to the teeth, have an offshore account, a thing on the side, a leak in the bag, a tension headache and the unutterable fear of a cyber-attack or God forbid, having our identity stolen. And vices are booming.
The military industrial complex is absolutely sure we must be ready and even pre-emptively strike with Tony Stark precision and magnitude, every conceivable enemy who may ever arise in the history of the world, and this is done be unleashing the unheralded robotic force of drones and the new waves of ever complex technology which just happens to be made by their friends at X,Y, and Z Destructomatics, which is now to be bought out by World Peace Inc., where, “We bring that kind of peace your grandfather’s dreamed about.”
If they war machine wants war then cyberwar it is, and the hackers move in a succession of embedding constructions meant to busy the foe while the real work is done by the insiders who tape worm the economy from the belly of the beast. The fight back comes in the form of productivity increases and the loss of jobs which really comes at a time when the jobs were no longer available anyways. And it all gets back to doing it for ourselves.
Once the votes are tallied and the signatures are dry, the next move is to totally destroy the middle class. Now, who is actually doing this? Oh, my God the fear mongering continues on into the night and meanwhile the throngs and thongs sit by at the malls of America, waiting to see who leaves on Dancing with the Stars.
