Obituary: Jesse Grady Steel
Jesse Grady Steel, 90, passed away in Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Medical Center in Nacogdoches. He was born September 25, 1922 in Tyler, Texas. Obituary: Patricia Ann Blake
Mrs. Patricia Ann Blake, age 75, of Appleby, Texas, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, in Palestine, Texas.
Mrs. Blake was born Nov. 8, 1937, in Gladewater. She grew up in the Houston area and had lived there for many years. She and John T. Blake Jr. were married Jan. 17, 1956, and have lived in Appleby for the past several years. She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church and enjoyed Bible studies and activities.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, John T. Blake Jr. of Appleby; sons and daughters-in-law, John T. Blake III and Deborah Ann Blake of Katy, Richard “Bubba Blake and wife Connie of Richmond, and Bennett Donald Blake and William Daniel “Danny” Blake and wife Gemi , all of Katy; grandchildren, John T. Blake IV and wife Tonie, Taylor M. Blake, and Shawn M. Blake, all of Katy, Jacob Blake of Houston, Joseph Blake and wife Erin of Katy, Sarah Blake of Richmond, Christopher Donald Blake, Tiffany Nicole Blake, and Kayla D. Blake, all of Katy; brother, William “Bill” Hurley and wife Yvette of Temple; nephews, Charlie Hurley, and Billy Hurley.
Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church, located at 429 Happy Land Road in Appleby, with Pastor Steve Ewton officating. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf, 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
Memorial contributions may be offered at Bethel Baptist Church, 429 Happy Land Road, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.

Obituary: Carrie Lea Lancaster Fuller
Carrie Lea Lancaster Fuller, 38, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Carrie lived life to the fullest, loved without reservation, and unwaveringly conducted herself with dignity, strength, and grace. She was born in Nacogdoches on February 15, 1974, to parents Wayne Ray Lancaster and Mary Jane Tuttle Lancaster and remained in East Texas until her death. After graduating from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Master of Social Work degree, she served others through her private practice as a licensed clinical social worker in multiple nursing homes. She married Gregory “Greg” Dean Fuller in 2000 and had two beautiful daughters Madalyn Grace Fuller and Avery Jane Fuller, whom she loved more than life itself.
Carrie is survived by her husband Greg and daughters Madalyn and Avery; father Wayne and wife Ka’ren; brother, Kelly Wayne Lancaster; sister Amy Rebecca Lancaster Gall and husband John, and sons Jonah and Eli; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her loving mother Jane. The love, support, and assistance so generously offered by family and friends have been greatly appreciated. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012, at First Baptist Church, located at 411 North Street in Nacogdoches. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 5127 North Street, Nacogdoches. Family and friends are invited to a visitation Friday, November 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches. ’Tis the Season
The Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library will host the opening of the exhibit “’Tis the Season” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2012 in conjunction with the Nine Flags Festival.
The exhibit takes visitors back to the holiday celebrations of Adolphus Sterne’s day. Visitors will be treated to the Christmas décor, topics of conversations and fashion that might have been seen and heard at a Nacogdoches party in the early 1800’s. The exhibit relies on historic events and Sterne’s diary to recreate a mid-winter party during the years of Spain’s control over Texas. As part of the exhibit, the front porch of the house will be wrapped in muslin; a practice even wealthy families such as the Sterne’s utilized to accommodate guests during the cold, holiday season.
Tour guides dressed in period costume will give tours of the museum. The museum will observe special hours for the exhibit opening from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday in conjunction with Wassail Fest. Warm Wassail will greet visitors on the front porch of the home before they travel back into an 1800’s Christmas party.
The exhibit will run through December 31st and can be viewed during normal museum hours; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The exhibit opening is free, but donations are welcome. SFA vs. Northwestern football game changed to 3 p.m.
The SFA Lumberjacks are set to kick-off against Northwestern State at 3:05 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches on Saturday, Nov. 17. The game was originally scheduled to be played at 6 p.m., but was pushed up to accommodate the regional telecast.
The Southland Conference Television Network will televise the coverage beginning at 3 p.m., CST.
SFA and Northwestern battle annually for Chief Caddo, college football’s largest trophy. Northwestern State leads the Chief Caddo series 28-17-1, though SFA has won Chief Caddo in the last three consecutive years.
Alumni Corner will be held in the usual spot, on the corner of Raquet and Hayter streets, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Come out and join fellow alumni and friends during the last tailgate of the season for a catered meal and beverages. The menu, ‘Home on the Range,’ will feature carved herb-roasted pork loin with a Dijon white wine sauce, roasted potatoes, green beans and whole baby carrots.

SFA School of Theatre to stage reading of new play ‘Spark’
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – As part of a nationwide, month-long script reading program presented by the New York-based company No Passport, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a special staged reading of the new play “Spark,” written by OBIE-Award winning playwright Caridad Svich. The reading will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA Campus. Admission is free.
“Spark” is about three sisters, one of whom has just returned to her small town from five years of serving in the military, said SFA Professor of Theatre Jason Davids Scott, who will be directing the staged reading.
“It is an intimate and intense family drama that not only explores a returning soldier’s homecoming, but the ways in which military service has a profound effect on those left behind at home,” Scott said.
Svich notes that the national script-reading scheme, presented the same month as Veteran’s Day and in the shadow of the national elections, “has been developed to honor U.S. war veterans, shed light on the plight of female veterans in particular, and to raise increased awareness for their stories,” she said.
Scott, who recently directed the SFA School of Theatre Summer Repertory production of “Steel Magnolias,” agrees that the timing of the play makes it all the more powerful.
“This is not a play that takes sides or tries to be political,” he said. “It’s an honest look at an American family during wartime. Most of us have family and friends who have returned from military service or are currently serving. ‘Spark’ brings to light a number of emotional and interpersonal issues that are often overlooked in our more abstract public discussions about the military and foreign policy.”
The cast of “Spark” includes new professor Laura Rikard, who will be seen in a small part in the upcoming film “Lincoln,” alongside SFA School of Theatre students Kurt Bilanoski, Molly Dyer, Ingunn Kristjansdottir and Corinne Shady. SFA alumnus and acting teacher Brad Maule will also perform in a key, supporting role.
The play, presented in two-acts with five characters, focuses on poverty in America, what happens when soldiers come home, and the strength of family. It will be presented in more than a dozen U.S. theatres and venues and at more than 15 universities.

Unknown Graves at Cemetery Marked
The Zion Hill Cemetery, which is located off Park Street, had 23 new headstones laid on Friday afternoon. After falling into disrepair in the 1970s, the cemetery has been under the custodianship of the City of Nacogdoches, and, according to historical records, had numerous unmarked graves. During a survey conducted by Stephen F. Austin State University students and faculty, they were able to definitively identify 23 unmarked graves.
Since the 1880s, the cemetery has been in use by the Zion Hill Baptist Church, and as a part of the ongoing efforts to maintain and restore this cemetery the Mu Sigma Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity of Stephen F. Austin State University raised money and purchased 23 flat headstones with the inscription “unknown” written beneath a simple cross. These markers were placed on the locations of the unmarked graves by the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and the City of Nacogdoches Cemetery Department.
This project is a partnership between the City of Nacogdoches, Stephen F. Austin State University, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. Last year, the chain link fence that bordered Park Street was taken down and replaced with a new wrought iron fence, which was provided by the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. and is now lined with bulbs planted by Jeff Abt. The City of Nacogdoches hopes to continue to improve this cemetery and shed light on the history of Zion Hill Baptist Church and Zion Hill Cemetery.
