Chamber luncheon gives employment outlook
Curious for a peek at next year’s expected employment trends for employers and employees? Get the “2013 Employment Outlook” and meet speaker Marilyn Hartsook, operations director, Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas Planning at the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and the Pineywoods Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Fourth Friday Luncheon. The event is noon to 1 p.m., Dec. 14 at Hotel Fredonia and sponsored by Suddenlink Communications.
“Issues affecting the employment outlook, how the workforce is changing and what industries and jobs look good for 2013 will be some of the main points covered in the presentation,” Hartsook said.
Hartsook assists the executive director with the planning and oversight of contracted operations for workforce centers and subsidized child care in the 12county, deep east Texas area. She is also a grant writer, labor market researcher and analyst, contract manager, performance analyst and special projects manager.
Hartsook has been involved in workforce development since 1988 as an eligibility specialist and program monitor with Deep East Texas Council of Governments. She worked with the Texas Department Human Services from 1994 until 1999, when she began employment with the Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas as the Program Manager for all workforce programs.
In 2001, Hartsook graduated magna cum laude from StephenF.AustinStateUniversity with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
She moved to Lufkin in 1985 where she reared her two children, and she now enjoys “the two most beautiful and wonderful grandchildren in all of Texas,” she said.
The luncheon serves as the chamber’s monthly membership meeting, and all from the community are invited to attend. Reservations are required by Dec. 11, and lunch is $16 at the door. All attendees will be entered in a $50 cash drawing, and every Chamber member is entered in a $250 drawing, but you must be present to win. Both drawings are sponsored by First Bank & Trust East Texas.

This weekend at the Farmer’s Market
Don’t forget that the Nacogdoches Farmer’s Market is open year round on Saturday’s from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. We have a variety of vendors that provide access to fresh produce even during the winter season.
Things you might find this time of year: baked goods (breads, cakes, mini cheesecakes, cookies, fried pies & pies), organic beef, candles, canned goods (jams & jellies, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), artisan Texas cheese, organic chicken, free-range eggs, organic tilapia fish filets, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (cacti, bedding plants, house plants, fruit trees, trees & whips), organic pork, smoothies, soaps (lye and herbal), sugar cane syrup, tamales, vinegars, fruit wines and wood products. LOCAL PRODUCE: frozen shelled beans (butter, baby Lima & pinto), unshelled pinto beans, beets, bok choi, Chinese cabbage, eggplants (5 types), greens (arugula, broccoli, Swiss chard, collards, kale, mizuna, mustard, sorrel, spinach & turnip), herbs (3 types of basil, 3 type of mint, rosemary & thyme), lettuce (red leaf & others), frozen shelled peas (blackeyed, brown Crowder, Lady cream, purple hull & zipper cream), unshelled purple hull peas, pecans (cracked, shelled & unshelled), peppers (banana, green Bell, cayenne, cow horn, habanera, jalapeno & serrano), persimmons, sweet potatoes, radishes (cherry bell & Diakon), squash (banana, butternut, pinata, spaghetti and winter), tomatoes (green & red) and turnips.

The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

Obituary: Barbara Ann Dennis
Barbara Ann Dennis, 83, passed away at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family on Monday, December 3, 2012.
She was born to parents, Oscar Whatley and Bennie Lambert Whatley in Kaufman County, Texas, on February 9, 1929.
She is survived by her husband Loy Dennis of Nacogdoches.
A private graveside service was conducted by Chaplain Ashley Cook. Barbara was interred at Swift Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.

Obituary: Jaxon Alexander Legg
Jaxon Alexander Legg, infant son of Sean Aaron Legg and Ashley Taylor (Hewitt) Legg of Livingston, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.
Jaxon was born June 19, 2012, in Lufkin, Texas.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his big brother, Brylon Legg.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the First Church of the Nazarene, located at 211 SE Stallings Drive in Nacogdoches with Bro. Dagostino officiating.

Obituary: Cristina Marie Love
Cristina Marie Love, age 45, passed away Nov. 28, 2012, in Harris County, Texas.
She was born Sept. 7, 1967, in San Diego, California, and had been a longtime resident of the Nacogdoches area. Cristina was a 1985 graduate of Nacogdoches High School.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Jarrie Marie Love, in 2008.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Joshua Kaul and Kayla Strand of Houston, Texas, and Jacob Kaul of Austin; father, Cliffod Olen Love of North Richland Hills, Texas; sisters and brother-in-law, Natalie Love Adams and Samie Love Montes and husband Chad A. Montes; and nieces and nephews, Cassie Adams, Daniel Adams and wife Marie Claude Adams, Aaron Adams, Grace Montes, and Vivian Montes.
Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, 5400 North Street, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Private interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 5127 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
